SIU Edwardsville at Eastern Kentucky
RICHMOND, Ky. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle where neither team could find consistent offensive rhythm, SIU Edwardsville edged Eastern Kentucky 56-51 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday afternoon at McBrayer Arena.
The contest, played on Nov. 7, 2025, saw the Cougars improve to 2-0 on the young season while the Lady Colonels fell to 1-1.
The game was a back-and-forth affair defined by gritty defense and offensive droughts. SIU Edwardsville never trailed after the first quarter but could never fully pull away from a determined Eastern Kentucky squad. The Cougars built their lead in the middle quarters, outscoring the Lady Colonels 26-20 across the second and third periods to create a cushion they would protect down the stretch.
Lauren Miller, a 5-foot-10 guard from Camp Point, Illinois, was the offensive engine for SIU Edwardsville. She poured in a game-high 25 points, narrowly missing a double-double by pulling down nine rebounds in 34 minutes of action. Her scoring prowess was vital for a Cougars team that otherwise struggled to generate points.
Miller received key support from guard Kiyoko Proctor of Alton, Illinois, who added 10 points. In the paint, Adebukola Akomolafe of El Paso, Texas, controlled the glass with eight rebounds.
For Eastern Kentucky, the effort was led by a balanced attack. Joseana Vaz, a 6-foot forward from Praia, Cape Verde, posted 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Liz Freihofer of Union, Kentucky, filled the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists in a team-high 39 minutes. Kailani Lindsey from Wildwood, Florida, provided a spark off the bench with seven points and six rebounds.
The statistical story of the game was one of remarkable parity. Both teams finished with an identical 24 points in the paint and 6 points off turnovers. The contest was ultimately decided by SIU Edwardsville’s ability to execute slightly better in the half-court, led by Miller’s individual scoring efforts.
The victory extends SIU Edwardsville’s early-season momentum following a dominant 96-47 win over Missouri Baptist in their opener. Eastern Kentucky was looking to build on a 95-41 victory over Transylvania but fell short against a tough Cougars defense.
The result was an upset according to pregame projections, as Interstat’s ELO system had given Eastern Kentucky a 96.60 percent probability to win on its home floor.
SIU Edwardsville will look to continue its unbeaten start when it travels to face Northwestern on Sunday. Eastern Kentucky will aim to rebound at home against Evansville on Wednesday.
