Cougars Edge Lady Colonels in Defensive Struggle
RICHMOND, Ky. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed shots and grinding possessions, the SIU Edwardsville Cougars edged the Eastern Kentucky Lady Colonels 56-51 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday afternoon at McBrayer Arena.
The contest, which saw both teams combine to shoot under 33 percent from the floor, was a stark contrast to each team’s high-scoring season opener. SIU Edwardsville remained undefeated at 2-0, while Eastern Kentucky evened its record at 1-1.
The game was a tale of two halves, with the Lady Colonels holding a narrow 24-23 lead at halftime after a first half where neither team could find an offensive rhythm. The third quarter proved decisive, as the Cougars outscored Eastern Kentucky 13-10 to take a two-point lead into the final period and never relinquished it.
Lauren Miller, a 5-foot-10 guard from Camp Point, Illinois, was the offensive catalyst for SIU Edwardsville. She poured in 25 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked a shot in 34 minutes of action, consistently creating her own offense in a game where assists were scarce. Her backcourt mate, 5-foot-6 guard Kiyoko Proctor of Alton, Illinois, provided crucial support with 10 points.
For Eastern Kentucky, the effort was more balanced but ultimately insufficient. Liz Freihofer, a 5-foot-10 guard from Union, Kentucky, led the Lady Colonels with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists in a team-high 39 minutes. Joseana Vaz, a 6-foot forward from Praia, Cape Verde, was a force inside, recording 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
The statistical sheet underscored the game’s defensive and often sloppy nature. SIU Edwardsville shot just 20 for 55 from the field, a 36.4 percent clip, and were anemic from beyond the arc, making only 3 of 15 attempts. Their struggles continued at the free-throw line, where they converted only 13 of 25 chances.
Eastern Kentucky’s shooting was even colder. The Lady Colonels finished 18 for 59 from the floor, a 30.5 percent rate, and hit just 6 of 25 three-point attempts. They were only slightly better from the charity stripe, making 9 of 16.
Possession was a key factor. The Cougars were marginally more efficient, scoring 56 points on 67 possessions for an offensive rating of 83.7. Eastern Kentucky managed just 51 points on 71 possessions, resulting in a meager offensive rating of 72.2. The Lady Colonels also hurt their cause with 16 turnovers, compared to 11 for SIU Edwardsville.
Both teams were even in several key categories, each scoring 24 points in the paint and 6 points off turnovers. Eastern Kentucky held a slight 12-11 edge in offensive rebounds and blocked six shots to SIU Edwardsville’s three, but it wasn’t enough to overcome their overall offensive inefficiency.
The victory extends SIU Edwardsville’s early-season momentum as they prepare for a road test at Northwestern on Sunday. Eastern Kentucky will look to rebound when they host Evansville next Wednesday. The result was an upset according to Interstat’s ELO system, which had projected Eastern Kentucky with a 96.60 percent probability to win.
