San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth contest that saw seven combined runs in the first inning alone, the Los Angeles Dodgers mounted a steady comeback to defeat the San Francisco Giants 7-5 on Saturday night at a sold-out Dodger Stadium.
A crowd of 53,251 witnessed the Dodgers (88-67) secure their third consecutive victory over their National League West rivals, improving to 9-4 against the Giants (76-79) this season. The win further solidified Los Angeles’s hold on a playoff berth while San Francisco’s fading postseason hopes took another hit.
The game exploded into chaos from the first pitch. San Francisco’s offense ambushed Dodgers ace Tyler Glasnow, sending 10 men to the plate and plating five runs in a grueling top of the first. The inning was punctuated by a three-run double off the bat of designated hitter Bryce Eldridge, who drove a sharp fly ball to left field to clear the bases. Glasnow struggled with his command, issuing three walks in the frame, including a bases-loaded free pass to Drew Gilbert that forced in the inning’s final run.
Undeterred, the Dodgers’ potent lineup responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning against Giants starter Kai-Wei Teng. After two quick strikeouts, Freddie Freeman was hit by a pitch, bringing Max Muncy to the plate. Muncy connected on a towering two-run homer to right-center field, instantly cutting the deficit to 5-2 and shifting the momentum back towards the home dugout.
From there, the game evolved into a battle of bullpens. Glasnow settled in remarkably after his disastrous first, striking out seven over five innings of work. He did not allow another run, giving his team a chance to climb back. The Dodgers began their methodical comeback in the fourth inning when Michael Conforto launched a solo home run to left-center, making it 5-3.
Los Angeles drew even closer later in the fourth. Walks to Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts set the table for Freeman, who delivered a two-out, run-scoring single to right field to plate Ohtani and trim the Giants’ lead to a single run at 5-4.
The Dodgers completed their comeback an inning later. Tommy Edman led off the bottom of the fifth by launching a solo shot to left field, tying the game at 5-5. The deadlock was broken in the sixth. Ohtani, the reigning MVP, crushed a mammoth solo home run to left-center, his 53rd of the season, to give Los Angeles its first lead at 6-5. The Dodgers weren’t done; Betts doubled and later scored on a two-out, RBI single from Teoscar Hernández that deflected off the glove of Giants third baseman Matt Chapman, providing a critical insurance run.
San Francisco made one final push in the seventh. Rafael Devers led off the inning with a solo homer to right-center, pulling the Giants within one run at 7-6. They subsequently put the tying and go-ahead runs on base with walks to Willy Adames and Eldridge, but reliever Will Klein emerged from the Los Angeles bullpen to extinguish the threat, inducing an inning-ending force out from Jung Hoo Lee.
The Giants’ offense was silenced the rest of the way. Klein struck out the side in a dominant eighth inning, and closer Jack Dreyer worked a perfect ninth, striking out one, to seal the victory and earn his fourth save of the season.
Tyler Glasnow (4-3) weathered the early storm to earn the win. Joel Peguero (3-1), who was on the mound for the Dodgers’ go-ahead rallies in the fifth and sixth innings, was charged with the loss.
Key performances included a stellar relief outing from the Giants’ JT Brubaker, who threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. For the Dodgers, Conforto had a strong night at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a home run, and the bullpen combination of Anthony Banda, Will Klein and Jack Dreyer delivered four shutout innings to close out the game, allowing just one hit and striking out five.
The victory moves the Dodgers to 21 games above .500 as they continue their push toward the postseason. The Giants, now three games under .500, have lost four of their last five games. The two teams conclude their four-game series on Sunday.
