Rhode Island at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — In a Friday night showdown defined by offensive execution and a pivotal fourth-quarter turnover, the Brown Bears held off a persistent Rhode Island Rams squad for a 28-21 victory at Stevenson Field on Oct. 3, 2025.

The Bears, improving to 1-1, leaned on a balanced offensive attack and a stingy second-half defense to secure the win. The Rams, who entered the game with a 4-0 record, fell to 4-1 despite a prolific passing performance from quarterback Devin Farrell.

Brown set the tone early, matching Rhode Island’s opening score with two first-quarter touchdowns. After the Rams took an early lead on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Farrell to Marquis Buchanan, the Bears responded with a 6-yard scoring run from Matt Childs. James Murphy then connected with Ty Pezza on an 18-yard touchdown pass to cap the first-quarter scoring, knotting the game at 14.

The second quarter saw both teams trade touchdowns. Farrell found Omari Walker for a 30-yard strike, but Brown answered with a methodical drive that ended with Childs’ second rushing touchdown, a 3-yard plunge, sending the teams into halftime tied at 21.

The Bears seized control in the third quarter. Murphy engineered a decisive 13-play, 77-yard drive, culminating in an 8-yard touchdown pass to Solomon Miller. That score gave Brown a 28-21 lead, a margin it would not relinquish.

Rhode Island threatened throughout the second half but was repeatedly turned away. A critical opportunity vanished early in the fourth quarter when Farrell, while completing a pass to Buchanan, fumbled after a 10-yard gain. Brown defensive back Elias Archie recovered the loose ball at the Rhode Island 46, halting a promising Rams drive.

The Rams finally broke through again with 4:11 remaining in the game. Farrell capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Matt Smith, pulling Rhode Island back within a single score at 28-21.

Needing a stop, the Rhode Island defense forced a Brown punt, giving Farrell one final chance with 1:55 on the clock. The quarterback efficiently moved the Rams from their own 10-yard line to midfield. However, with 37 seconds remaining, his pass intended for Aboraa Kwarteng was intercepted by Brown safety Miles Brophy, sealing the victory for the home team.

Farrell finished with impressive numbers, completing 30 of 44 passes for 353 yards and three touchdowns, but the two second-half turnovers proved costly. Buchanan was his primary target, hauling in seven receptions for 76 yards and a score.

For Brown, Murphy was efficient, completing 20 of 27 attempts for 201 yards and two touchdowns, adding 18 yards on the ground. Childs was a workhorse, rushing 22 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns. Pezza led Bears receivers with six catches for 93 yards and a touchdown.

The result was an upset according to pregame projections, which heavily favored Rhode Island. The Rams were listed as 15.5-point favorites, and statistical models gave them an 83.6 percent probability to win. The combined score of 49 points narrowly exceeded the over/under line of 49.5.

Rhode Island looks to rebound next Saturday when it hosts New Hampshire. Brown returns to action the following Friday, Oct. 10, with a road game against in-state foe Bryant.
