Brown Holds Off Rhode Island for 28‑21 Victory
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — In a hard-fought intrastate clash defined by offensive efficiency and a pair of crucial fourth-quarter turnovers, the Brown Bears held off a late rally to defeat the Rhode Island Rams 28-21 on Friday night at Stevenson Field.
Quarterback James Murphy of Reading, Mass., orchestrated a balanced Bears attack, completing 20 of 27 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Matt Childs of Medway, Mass., pounded in two scores on the ground. The victory improved Brown’s record to 1-1, while the Rams, who entered the game with a perfect 4-0 mark, fell to 4-1.
The game unfolded as a back-and-forth affair from the outset, defying pregame expectations that heavily favored the visiting Rams. Brown established an early rhythm, answering a quick Rhode Island score with two of their own in a high-scoring first quarter.
Rhode Island struck first, capping an 11-play, 93-yard opening drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Devin Farrell to Providence native Marquis Buchanan. The Bears responded immediately, with Childs finishing a short drive with a 6-yard touchdown run. After forcing a punt, Brown marched down the field again, with Murphy connecting with North Kingstown, R.I., receiver Ty Pezza on an 18-yard scoring strike to tie the game at 14-14 late in the first quarter.
The second quarter saw both teams trade touchdowns. Farrell, who finished with a prolific stat line of 30 completions on 44 attempts for 353 yards and three touchdowns, found Omari Walker of Mckinney, Texas, for a 30-yard score to put the Rams back in front. Brown answered with a methodical 76-yard drive, culminating in Childs’ second rushing touchdown, a 3-yard plunge, to send the teams into halftime deadlocked at 21-21.
The third quarter proved to be the decisive frame. After a missed 47-yard field goal by Rhode Island’s Garth White, the Bears engineered the go-ahead drive. Murphy efficiently moved the offense downfield and found Solomon Miller of Orlando, Fla., for an 8-yard touchdown pass, giving Brown a 28-21 lead with 4:36 remaining in the quarter.
The Rams threatened to tie the game multiple times in the fourth quarter, but the Bears’ defense came up with pivotal plays. Early in the period, Brown’s defense held strong after a missed 24-yard field goal attempt by Drew Crabtree of Brentwood, Tenn., preserved the seven-point lead.
The turning point came with just over 10 minutes remaining. Driving deep into Brown territory, Farrell completed a pass to Buchanan, who fumbled after a 10-yard gain. The ball was recovered by Brown defensive back Elias Archie of Cerritos, Calif., halting a promising Rhode Island drive.
The Rams had one final chance, mounting a desperate drive in the final two minutes. Farrell moved the offense from their own 17-yard line to midfield, but his pass on first down was intercepted by safety Miles Brophy of Round Rock, Texas, with 37 seconds left, sealing the victory for the Bears.
Despite the loss, Rhode Island’s offense showed potency. Farrell spread the ball to nine different receivers, with Greg Gaines III of Tampa, Fla., leading the way with five catches for 87 yards. Connor Finer of New Port Richey, Fla., added eight receptions for 84 yards, while Buchanan finished with seven catches for 76 yards and a score. The ground game was anchored by Antwain Littleton Jr. of Greenbelt, Md., who carried 15 times for 60 yards and caught five passes for 38 yards.
For Brown, Pezza was Murphy’s primary target, hauling in six passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. The Bears’ rushing attack was a committee effort, with Jackson Bennett of Orlando, Fla., providing a spark with 45 yards on seven carries. The Bears’ special teams also played a key role, with punter Malcolm Flynn of Tempe, Ariz., averaging 38.2 yards on five punts, often pinning the Rams deep in their own territory.
The result was a surprise based on national projections. While Interstat’s game simulator had projected a Brown victory by a score of 32-21, its ELO system gave Rhode Island an 83.6 percent probability to win. Brown had been installed as a pregame favorite by 15.5 points. The total score of 49 points narrowly went over the over/under line of 49.5.
Rhode Island looks to rebound next Saturday when it hosts New Hampshire. Brown returns to action next Friday with a road game against Bryant.
