Michigan vs. Ohio State
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — Noah Miller delivered two timely hits and drove in all three runs as Michigan defeated Ohio State 3-0 in a Big Ten baseball game Thursday at Sapp Fieldhouse.
Michigan left-hander Shane Brinham pitched a complete-game shutout, scattering five hits while striking out 11 and walking three. The Wolverines improved to 34-23 overall and 34-23 in conference play, while the Buckeyes fell to 30-25.
Miller, the Michigan catcher, broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning. After walks to Stephen Morrow and Tyler Turner and a hit batter loaded the bases, Miller singled up the middle to drive in Morrow and Turner, giving Michigan a 2-0 lead. The inning ended when Miller was erased on a double play.
The Wolverines added an unearned run in the top of the eighth. Turner reached on a fielding error by Ohio State shortstop Henry Kaczmar. After Ben Jefferis walked, Ryan Zamora relieved Buckeyes starter Gavin Kuzniewski. Miller then singled through the right side, scoring Turner and extending the lead to 3-0.
Kuzniewski took the loss, allowing two earned runs on one hit over seven-plus innings. He walked three and struck out seven. Zamora pitched the final two innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out three.
Ohio State threatened in the second inning when Cole Eckelman singled and walked Alec Ellis, but Brinham struck out Grant Mangrum and Miles Vandenheuvel to escape the jam. The Buckeyes put two runners on again in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Vandenheuvel, but Brinham retired the side.
Michigan’s offense managed only two hits, both by Miller. The Wolverines left eight runners on base. Ohio State had five hits — singles by Noah Furcht, Eckelman, Maddix Simpson, Vandenheuvel and another Simpson single in the ninth — but could not plate a run. The Buckeyes struck out 13 times.
The game marked a stark reversal from the teams’ previous meeting. Ohio State had swept a three-game series at Michigan from May 14-16, outscoring the Wolverines 28-6. Michigan entered the contest having lost four of its last five, including a 7-1 defeat at Washington on Wednesday. Ohio State had won two of its last three, beating Rutgers 3-2 on Wednesday and Washington 8-6 on Tuesday.
The Wolverines improved to 2-3 in the season series against the Buckeyes.
The game was played at Sapp Fieldhouse in Omaha, a neutral site for the Big Ten matchup. Michigan’s victory snapped a three-game losing streak in the head-to-head series dating to the May 14 sweep.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Ohio State 7, Michigan 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave Michigan a 60.6 percent probability to win.
