Michigan at Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. (Interstat) — Colby Turner went 4 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs, and the Michigan Wolverines erupted for a nine-run second inning to cruise past the Eastern Michigan Eagles 15-4 in a seven-inning, nonconference baseball game Monday at Oestrike Stadium.

The offensive outburst, which defied a pregame projection from Interstat that favored Eastern Michigan 6-5, propelled Michigan to its third straight victory and improved its record to 17-14. Eastern Michigan fell to 10-21.

The most important part of the game came early, as Michigan sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the second inning to break open a scoreless game. After a quiet first inning against Eastern Michigan starter Gabe Kennedy, the Wolverines’ offense ignited. Brayden Jefferis started the rally with a single, and Stephen Ossenfort walked. Greg Pace then launched a three-run homer to right field, providing all the runs Michigan would ultimately need.

The Wolverines were far from done. A single, a hit batter and an RBI single from Mitch Mullens kept the line moving. Turner followed with an RBI double, chasing Kennedy from the game. Reliever Emmett Gillies entered but could not stop the bleeding, allowing an RBI groundout from Kyle Haeger and a walk before finally recording the third out. By the time the inning ended, Michigan had built a commanding 9-0 lead.

Turner, the game’s top star, added a three-run homer in the fifth inning to extend the lead. He also singled and scored in the fourth and singled in another run in the seventh, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Pace also drove in four runs for Michigan, which finished with 14 hits.

Eastern Michigan showed brief life in the middle innings against Michigan starter Grant Bradley. The Eagles scored two runs in the third on an RBI single from Logan Jellison and added two more in the fourth on a two-run homer by Tristan Crane, who finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs. That cut the deficit to 11-4, but the Eagles would get no closer.

The Michigan bullpen slammed the door over the final three innings. Wyatt Novara struck out all three batters he faced in the fifth. Preston Barr followed with 1 2/3 perfect innings of relief, striking out three. Eastern Michigan’s final six batters were retired in order.

Eastern Michigan used seven pitchers in the loss. Carter White, Ethan Rowland and Gillies each provided scoreless relief outings for the Eagles.

Michigan next hosts Central Michigan on Tuesday. Eastern Michigan begins a three-game home series against Massachusetts on Friday. The two in-state rivals are scheduled to meet again next Wednesday in Ann Arbor.
