Seton Hall at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (Interstat) — The Monmouth Hawks, riding momentum from a strong midweek victory, will host the struggling Seton Hall Pirates in a non-conference baseball matchup Wednesday afternoon at Monmouth Baseball Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. under clear skies with temperatures in the mid-40s.

The Hawks (22-16) enter having won four of their last five, including a 10-6 road win at Long Island on Tuesday. Key to that victory was a stellar relief outing from right-hander Drew Yagodzinskie, who threw six hitless, scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Yagodzinskie, a player to watch for Monmouth, has been volatile lately, sandwiching that gem between an outing where he allowed nine earned runs to NJIT and a three-run relief appearance against Princeton.

Seton Hall (11-20) looks to halt a six-game skid, having been swept by Xavier last weekend. The Pirates managed just one run in the series finale, a 3-1 loss on Sunday. A bright spot in that defeat was starter Mason Christopher, who allowed three runs on two hits over 5 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Christopher, Seton Hall’s player to watch, will seek more consistency after recent struggles against Creighton and Saint John’s where he failed to pitch deep into games.

The teams are on divergent paths this season. Monmouth’s offense, fueled by Kevin Fedoruk and Simmi Whitehill who homered Tuesday, has powered the Hawks to a winning record. Seton Hall’s pitching staff has been taxed during its losing streak, with the team being outscored 36-8 over its last four games.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, Monmouth is projected to win 6-0.

Following this contest, Monmouth prepares for a weekend series against Rider at home. Seton Hall returns to Big East play with a three-game set against Villanova beginning Friday.
