William & Mary at Campbell

LILLINGTON, N.C. (Interstat) — Andrew Schuldt’s second-inning grand slam powered the Campbell Fightin’ Camels to a 9-2 victory over the William & Mary Tribe in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

The game’s decisive moment came early. With the score tied and two outs in the bottom of the second, Campbell’s Carlos Lugo doubled and Jett Music singled to set the table. After a walk to Grant Chapman loaded the bases, Schuldt, the Fightin’ Camels’ catcher, connected on a towering drive to deep left field for a four-run homer, instantly transforming a scoreless game into a 4-0 Campbell lead.

That swing provided all the offense Campbell would need, as its pitching staff dominated William & Mary’s lineup. Starter Camden Wimbish worked four innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits. The Tribe scratched across both runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Trey Kosuda and a sacrifice fly from Nate Iriotakis.

The bullpen, however, slammed the door. Reliever Connor Hensley earned the win with five masterful innings of relief. He surrendered just two hits and struck out nine Tribe batters, extinguishing any hope of a William & Mary rally. Hensley faced the minimum over his final four innings, aided by a caught stealing and a double play.

Campbell steadily extended its lead. Music delivered a two-run single in the sixth to make it 6-2. An eighth-inning sacrifice fly by Lawson Morton and a two-run single by pinch-runner turned second baseman Elijah Clayton, who drove in two with his single in the eighth, capped the scoring.

William & Mary’s offense was stifled, managing only four hits total and striking out 15 times. Starter Zach Boyd took the loss, charged with four earned runs in three innings of work. Tribe relievers Charles Seneker, Stephen Christopher and Connor Jernigan combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings before Campbell broke through again late.

The win improved Campbell’s season record to 5-7 overall. William & Mary fell to 5-6. The result defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 5-3 Tribe victory, though the site’s ELO system had favored Campbell with a 70.1% win probability.

The two teams continue their three-game conference series Saturday at Jim Perry Stadium.
