Campbell at College of Charleston

MOUNT PLEASANT (Interstat) — Zach Sabers pitched 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball, striking out three, and the Campbell Fightin Camels completed a three-game sweep of the College of Charleston Cougars with a 6-4 victory Sunday at CofC Baseball Stadium at Patriot’s Point.

Sabers, who had struggled in his previous start against Elon, rebounded to quiet the Cougars’ lineup. He allowed only one earned run and did not surrender a hit over his outing, though the box score later showed a solo home run by College of Charleston’s Nick Diaz in the fifth inning. Campbell’s bullpen then held off a late Cougars rally.

The Fightin Camels struck first in the top of the first. With one out, Luis Lugo singled to left, and after Jett Music walked, Joey Morton reached on an infield fly. Jonah Oster doubled to left-center, scoring Lugo and moving Music to third, but Campbell could not add more.

Campbell extended the lead in the third. Bryce Rumley walked, and Lugo singled to put runners at the corners. Music grounded out to second, scoring Rumley, and Morton followed with a two-run homer to right field, making it 4-0. Oster doubled again but was picked off second base.

College of Charleston got on the board in the fourth. An error by third baseman Oster allowed Kyle Amman to reach. After a groundout moved Amman to second, Ethan Plyler singled to right-center, driving in an unearned run. The Cougars cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth when Diaz led off with a home run to left.

Campbell answered in the sixth. Andrew Murphy doubled, advanced on a balk, and scored on Logan Chapman’s single through the left side. Chapman finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.

In the top of the ninth, Music provided an insurance run with a solo home run to left-center off Cougars reliever Ryan Rogers. Music’s blast made it 6-2.

The Cougars mounted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth. Brooks Tippett walked and advanced to second on a walk to Carson Holbrook. Amman doubled to center, scoring Tippett and sending Holbrook to third. After a pitching change, Chase Johnson grounded out to first, bringing home Holbrook and cutting the margin to 6-4. Beau Brailey then induced a groundout to short to end the game, earning his first save of the season.

Campbell’s Braxton Shaffer worked 2 2/3 innings, striking out four, and Brailey closed with 2/3 of a scoreless frame. For College of Charleston, starter Alex Lyon allowed five hits and one earned run over 5 2/3 innings, striking out five.

Plyler led the Cougars with three hits and an RBI. Diaz added a homer. For Campbell, Morton went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, and Oster collected two hits and an RBI.

The sweep improved Campbell’s overall record to 29-14. College of Charleston dropped to 20-23. The teams had split a four-game series earlier in the season before Campbell took all three games this weekend.

Campbell returns home Tuesday to face High Point. College of Charleston visits The Citadel on Wednesday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of College of Charleston 7, Campbell 6, while Interstat’s ELO system gave Campbell a 52.60 percent probability to win.
