Campbell at College of Charleston
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (Interstat) — Connor Hensley allowed no hits over 6 2/3 innings and the Campbell Fightin Camels erupted for 16 runs on 13 hits to rout the College of Charleston Cougars 16-1 on Friday night at CofC Baseball Stadium at Patriot’s Point.
Hensley struck out seven and surrendered only one earned run while improving to an unspecified record for the season. The right-hander’s performance came five days after he took a loss against Elon, when he allowed five hits and three earned runs over six innings. His dominance Friday included retiring the first 10 batters he faced before a throwing error by shortstop Logan Chapman in the third inning, though Campbell quickly snuffed out the threat with a double play.
The Fightin Camels improved to 27-14 overall and 20-21 in the Colonial Athletic Association after winning their fourth consecutive game. College of Charleston fell to 20-21 overall and 13-9 in conference play, dropping its third straight after a series win at William & Mary last weekend.
Campbell set the tone immediately. After a leadoff strikeout, Carlos Lugo doubled to right-center in the first inning but was stranded when the next two batters made outs. The breakthrough came in the second inning. Camden Murphy singled to left and Jett Music followed with a two-run home run to left-center, scoring Murphy. The inning continued with a single and a walk but no further damage.
The third inning provided more separation. With one out, Lukas Schramm and Murphy were hit by pitches. Music then singled through the left side to drive in Schramm, and back-to-back plays extended the lead. Andrew Schuldt laid down a sacrifice bunt that plated Murphy, moving Music to second. Chapman struck out to end the inning, but Campbell led 3-0.
College of Charleston’s best chance to answer came in the bottom of the third when an error put a runner on base. A single and a walk followed, but shortstop Logan Chapman turned a double play to end the inning, catching a line drive and doubling off the runner.
The game turned decisively in the fifth. Murphy doubled to left, Music was hit by pitch and Schuldt doubled to left-center, driving in both runners and scoring Murphy and Music. Schuldt then stole third, and Chapman homered to center field for two more runs, making it 8-0. After a pitching change, the Cougars escaped further damage when a pinch runner was caught stealing.
Hensley continued to cruise. He retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth, but the sixth inning saw the Cougars scratch across their only run. A walk, a balk and a pair of singles brought home a run, cutting the deficit to 8-1. Hensley induced a double play to limit the damage.
Campbell put the game away in the seventh. Lugo walked, Schuldt walked and Chapman walked to load the bases. A bases-loaded walk to the pinch runner made it 9-1. That brought up Lugo again, and he crushed a grand slam to right field, clearing the bases and giving Campbell a 13-1 advantage. Pinch hitter Logen Sutton followed with a triple to right-center, and a groundout drove him in for a 14-1 lead. Another run scored later in the inning on a fielder’s choice, making it 16-1.
Lugo finished the game 4 for 4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs. Music went 2 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs. Chapman added a home run and two RBIs, while Schuldt drove in three runs with a double and a sacrifice bunt. Schramm homered in the sixth inning for two RBIs. Sutton tripled in his only at-bat.
Andrew Schuldt also caught a runner stealing, and Parker Webb pitched the final third of an inning, allowing no hits and no runs.
For College of Charleston, Drew Medley and Sean McCabe struggled in relief. Medley allowed two earned runs on two hits over 1 1/3 innings, while McCabe gave up two earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts in one inning. The Cougars managed only five hits, all singles and one double, and grounded into two double plays.
The victory extended Campbell’s winning streak in the head-to-head series. The Fightin Camels swept a three-game set at home against College of Charleston in late March and have now won four straight meetings overall.
The two teams are scheduled to play again Saturday and Sunday at the same venue.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of College of Charleston 7, Campbell 6. Interstat’s ELO system gave Campbell a 50.30 percent probability to win entering the contest.
