College of Charleston at Campbell

LILLINGTON, N.C. (Interstat) — David Rossow delivered a dominant start and the Campbell bullpen survived a late scare as the Fightin’ Camels defeated the College of Charleston 6-3 in Colonial Athletic Association baseball Saturday at Jim Perry Stadium.

The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded in the evening, saw Campbell (17-9, 2-0 CAA) build an early lead and hold off a furious eighth-inning rally by the Cougars (10-16, 0-2) to secure the series victory.

Rossow, a right-hander, was the catalyst for Campbell. After the Cougars scratched out a first-inning run without a hit via three walks and a bases-loaded walk to Kevin Penfield, Rossow settled in to stifle the Charleston offense. He pitched six strong innings, allowing just two hits and the one earned run while striking out nine batters. His performance stabilized the game after a chaotic start for both sides.

Campbell responded immediately in the bottom of the first against Charleston starter Parker Sweeney. Joe Simpson led off with a single and scored on an RBI double from Carlos Lugo. Lugo later came home on a wild pitch, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

The Fightin’ Camels seized control in the second inning. With two on, Trent Rumley laced a two-run double down the left-field line to give Campbell a 4-3 lead. After a pitching change brought in Sweeney for Charleston, Rumley scored on a passed ball to extend the advantage to 5-3. Sweeney was brilliant in relief, throwing four hitless innings with three strikeouts, but the damage was done.

Campbell added a critical insurance run in the sixth. Simpson tripled and then scored on a groundout by Lugo, making it 6-3.

The most pivotal sequence came in the top of the eighth inning. With Campbell reliever Jett Music on the mound, the Cougars loaded the bases with no outs. Music then walked Cole Plyler to force in a run, and Trotter Diaz followed with an RBI single up the middle, pulling Charleston within 6-5 and leaving the bases loaded with still no outs.

Campbell manager Jett Music then made a strategic move, bringing in Beau Brailey from the bullpen. Brailey induced a foul popout and a strikeout before getting Aidan Amman to hit into a fielder’s choice forceout at third base to end the threat and preserve the one-run lead.

Brailey returned for the ninth and worked a perfect inning to earn the save, securing the win for Rossow.

Dylan Johnson had three hits for the College of Charleston, which out-hit Campbell 8-7 but stranded 11 baserunners. Simpson led Campbell with three hits, while Lugo drove in two runs.

The victory followed a 12-10 Campbell win in the series opener on Friday. The teams conclude the three-game series Sunday afternoon.
