Campbell at North Carolina State
RALEIGH, N.C. (Interstat) — Joey Morton’s three-run homer in the sixth inning broke open a tight game and a parade of Campbell pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the Fightin’ Camels defeated North Carolina State 7-2 on Tuesday night at Doak Field.
The visiting Fightin’ Camels (15-9) won their fourth consecutive game, capitalizing on a pivotal sixth-inning rally against Wolfpack starter Luke Hemric to hand North Carolina State (18-7) its second straight loss.
The game’s decisive moment came in the top of the sixth with Campbell clinging to a 2-1 lead. Grant Lugo led off with a single and Lawson Chapman followed with a bunt single. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Morton drove a 1-0 offering from Hemric deep over the right-field wall for a three-run shot, extending the Campbell lead to 5-1.
Morton, the game’s top star, finished 2 for 5 with a home run, a double and four RBIs. The first baseman’s blast provided all the necessary cushion for a dominant Campbell bullpen.
The Fightin’ Camels’ pitching staff was the story, as five relievers combined for six hitless innings after starter Connor Hensley allowed two runs — one earned — on four hits over three innings. Owen Simmons, Jett Music, Zach Sabers and Beau Brailey did not allow a hit over the final six frames. Simmons (3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K) earned the win in relief.
North Carolina State struck first in the opening inning. Eli Johnson walked, was sacrificed to second, and scored on a two-out RBI groundout by Alec Bargo. The Wolfpack added an unearned run in the third when Johnson scored from third on Chris McHugh’s RBI groundout, cutting Campbell’s early lead to 2-1.
Campbell had taken a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Morton that scored Dylan Simpson. They broke the game open in the seventh, adding two more runs on a two-run double by Mike Murphy that made it 7-2.
Hemric (5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 8 K) took the loss for the Wolfpack. McHugh led NC State’s offense, going 2 for 4 with an RBI double.
The result defied pregame projections, as Interstat’s ELO system had given the Wolfpack a 68.9% probability to win.
Campbell next hosts College of Charleston in a three-game series starting Friday. North Carolina State travels to face Georgia Tech in Atlantic Coast Conference play, also beginning Friday.
