Saint Louis Tops Fordham in Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Contest
GLEN ALLEN, Va. (Interstat) — In a grinding Atlantic 10 Conference women’s basketball matchup defined by defense and a standout individual performance, the Saint Louis Billikens outlasted the Fordham Rams 68-60 on Wednesday afternoon at the Henrico Sports and Events Center.
The game, witnessed by 1,181 fans, was a tale of two halves for the visiting Rams. Fordham, led by a sensational 23-point effort from sophomore guard Carryn Easley of Philadelphia, fought to a 17-17 stalemate after the first quarter. The Rams’ offense, however, stalled in the second period, managing only 11 points as Saint Louis built a 34-28 halftime lead it would never fully relinquish.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the third quarter as Fordham mounted its most serious challenge. Sparked by Easley’s scoring and a brief surge from reserve forward London Liley, who scored all 10 of her points in the second half, the Rams clawed back. They matched the Billikens nearly bucket for bucket in the period, cutting the deficit to 50-45 entering the final frame. The Rams’ defense forced several Saint Louis turnovers, and a Liley layup early in the fourth brought Fordham within three points, applying significant pressure on the home team.
Saint Louis responded with the poise and balance that ultimately secured the victory. While Fordham relied heavily on Easley, the Billikens showcased a multi-pronged attack. Freshman center Alyssa Koerkenmeier of Saint Rose, Illinois, was a dominant force inside, recording a double-double with 21 points, five blocked shots and four assists. Her presence in the paint altered countless Fordham attempts, particularly in the game’s critical closing minutes.
Koerkenmeier received ample support from her backcourt. Guards Zya Nugent of Denison, Texas, and Jahda Denis of Montreal, Canada, added 14 and 13 points, respectively. Denis was instrumental down the stretch, hitting key free throws and assisting on a crucial Koerkenmeier basket that extended the lead to seven points with under two minutes to play. Isabel Tillett of Manassas, Virginia, contributed eight points and three assists, including timely perimeter shooting.
Every time Fordham threatened, Saint Louis had an answer. After Liley’s driving layup made it 55-52 with just over four minutes remaining, Koerkenmeier answered with a layup on the other end. When Easley, who played 32 minutes, hit a floating jumper to keep the Rams close, Koerkenmeier again scored inside. The Rams were forced to foul in the final minute, and the Billikens, led by Nugent and Tillett, converted their free throws to seal the eight-point win.
The loss dropped Fordham to 10-20 overall, while Saint Louis improved to 12-20. The game was a rematch of a Feb. 11 contest won by Fordham 42-39, making this a season-series split. The Rams will have a quick turnaround, facing La Salle on Thursday, also at the Henrico Sports and Events Center, a neutral site for this conference tournament segment.
Despite the defeat, Fordham showed resilience, particularly from Easley, who carried the offensive load, and Liley, who provided a vital spark off the bench. Lakresha Edwards of Chilliwack, Canada, added eight points and a block for the Rams. For Saint Louis, the victory was a product of interior dominance, timely scoring from multiple sources, and composure in the face of a late Fordham rally.
