Lafayette Holds Off Bucknell for Patriot League Win
EASTON, Pa. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant opening statement and a resilient response, the Lafayette Leopards used a commanding first quarter to establish control and never relinquished it, defeating the Bucknell Bison 65-56 in a Patriot League women’s basketball matchup Wednesday afternoon at Kirby Sports Center.
The most critical phase of the contest unfolded in the game’s first ten minutes. Lafayette, energized from the opening tip, raced out to a 21-12 lead after the first quarter. The Leopards shot efficiently early, while Bucknell struggled to find its offensive rhythm against an active Lafayette defense that recorded two blocks in the period. The quarter was punctuated by a Sauda Ntaconayigize three-pointer just before the buzzer, extending the home team’s lead to nine and setting a decisive tone. That early cushion proved vital, as it allowed Lafayette to weather subsequent Bucknell pushes without ever facing a deficit.
Bucknell, to its credit, mounted a significant challenge in the second quarter. After falling behind by as many as 11 points, the Bison tightened their defense and began to chip away. A 10-2 run, fueled by a three-pointer from Anna Kunzwiler and a jumper from Hope Masonius, pulled Bucknell within three points at 29-26. The Bison’s defensive effort held Lafayette to just 13 points in the quarter, and they entered halftime trailing by a manageable six points, 34-28.
The third quarter became a back-and-forth affair where Bucknell repeatedly threatened but could never draw even. Each time the Bison closed the gap, Lafayette answered. Ella Kreuzer’s three-pointer for Bucknell cut the lead to 45-43 midway through the period, but the Leopards responded with a Talia Zurinskas jumper. Reese Zemitis converted a three-point play to keep Bucknell close at 48-46, only for Lafayette’s Rosie Scognamiglio to drain a three-pointer on the ensuing possession. The Bison’s inability to secure a stop during these critical momentum swings prevented them from overtaking the Leopards, who took a 50-48 lead into the final frame.
Fatigue and offensive stagnation finally doomed Bucknell’s comeback bid in the fourth quarter. The Bison managed just eight points on 3-of-15 shooting in the period, including several missed layups and blocked attempts at the rim. Lafayette’s interior defense, led by Emma Heaney, was formidable, recording three of its six total blocks in the final quarter. Meanwhile, the Leopards methodically extended their lead at the free-throw line, making 5 of 6 attempts in the quarter to seal the victory.
Lafayette was led by a standout performance from Emma Heaney, who posted a double-double with 9 points and 13 rebounds to go along with 3 blocks in 40 minutes of action. The effort marked a significant resurgence for the sophomore from Plainview, New York, following three consecutive games with limited minutes and production. Talia Zurinskas led all scorers with 19 points and added 5 assists and 2 blocks. Teresa Kiewiet also recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
For Bucknell, Ella Kreuzer came off the bench to provide a team-high 14 points, all in the second half. Mariah Hardy of Baltimore contributed 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Anna Kunzwiler from Leesburg, Virginia, grabbed 10 rebounds to go with 6 points. The Bison’s offensive struggles were encapsulated by their 21-of-58 shooting from the field and a season-low 3 assists as a team, underscoring the difficulty they faced in generating consistent offense against Lafayette’s defense.
The win improves Lafayette’s record to 8-12 overall, while Bucknell falls to 5-14. Both teams continue Patriot League play on Saturday, with Lafayette hosting American and Bucknell traveling to face Boston University.
Statistically, the game was won on the margins where Lafayette excelled. The Leopards held a 12-7 advantage in offensive rebounds, leading to 13 second-chance points. They also outscored Bucknell 11-7 from the free-throw line and were more efficient with their possessions, scoring 65 points on 59 trips for an offensive rating of 110.7, compared to Bucknell’s 89.2 rating. The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Lafayette over Bucknell, having also won the prior meeting on Jan. 14 by a 62-49 score.
