Marquette Golden Eagles vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — The Marquette women’s basketball team looks to rebound from its first loss in nearly three weeks when it faces Gonzaga in a nonconference matchup Sunday.

The Golden Eagles (4-2) saw a three-game winning streak snapped in an 84-73 road loss at Iowa State on Friday. Jaidynn Mason led Marquette with 17 points in the defeat. Prior to that, Marquette’s offense had been potent, averaging 70.3 points during its streak, which included a 75-43 rout of Milwaukee.

The Bulldogs (3-4), however, are also seeking to get back on track after dropping a close 76-72 decision to Indiana at home on Friday. Lauren Whittaker poured in 27 points for Gonzaga in the loss. The Bulldogs’ season has been marked by inconsistency, with their three victories coming against Eastern Washington, Toledo and North Dakota State.

Sunday’s game, to be played at Florida SouthWestern State, pits a Marquette offense that has shown flashes of high scoring against a Gonzaga team searching for defensive stability. The Golden Eagles will rely on the scoring of Mason and Skylar Forbes, while Gonzaga will look for another big performance from Whittaker and a double-double threat in Jaiden Haile, who had 10 points and nine rebounds last time out.

Following this neutral-site contest, Marquette opens Big East play at DePaul on Thursday. Gonzaga returns home to host Grand Canyon on the same day.
