Gonzaga Edges Marquette in Women’s Basketball Showdown

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by momentum swings and missed opportunities, the Gonzaga Bulldogs edged the Marquette Golden Eagles 65-61 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Florida SouthWestern State.

The contest saw both teams endure significant scoring droughts, with Marquette’s explosive first-quarter offense giving way to a prolonged cold spell that ultimately proved too much to overcome.

Marquette raced out to an early lead, fueled by a blistering first quarter in which they scored 26 points. The Golden Eagles’ offense was efficient and aggressive, building a four-point lead by the end of the period. However, the game turned dramatically in the second quarter as Gonzaga’s defense tightened and Marquette’s shooting went cold. The Golden Eagles managed only 12 points in the second period, allowing the Bulldogs to claw their way back into the game.

The third quarter was the lowest-scoring of the game for both sides, but it was particularly damaging for Marquette, which was held to just eight points. Gonzaga, meanwhile, managed 15 to take a slim lead heading into the final frame. The Bulldogs extended their advantage in the fourth quarter, outscoring Marquette 20-15 to secure the victory.

The game was a tale of contrasting offensive rhythms. Marquette’s early 26-point outburst was followed by quarters of 12, 8, and 15 points. Gonzaga, after scoring 22 in the first, was held to 8 in the second before finding more consistent production with 15 in the third and 20 in the fourth.

Lauren Whittaker of Gonzaga was the dominant force on the court. The 6-foot-3 forward from Christchurch, New Zealand, recorded a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds in 29 minutes, consistently creating problems for the Marquette defense in the paint and on the glass.

Marquette’s offense was spearheaded by Skylar Forbes. The 6-3 guard from Markham, Canada, logged 38 minutes and scored a team-high 24 points, battling to keep the Golden Eagles in contention during their offensive dry spells. Halle Vice, a 6-1 forward from Bettendorf, Iowa, provided a strong all-around performance with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 32 minutes.

Gonzaga’s backcourt was key to the win. Allie Turner, a 5-8 guard from St. Louis, Missouri, contributed 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in 34 minutes. Teryn Gardner, a 5-10 guard from Spokane, Washington, added 10 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.

For Marquette, Olivia Porter from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, chipped in 7 points and 3 rebounds, while Lee Volker of Purcellville, Virginia, dished out a team-high 5 assists to go with 6 points.

Statistically, the game was a defensive grind. Both teams struggled from the field, with Gonzaga shooting 24 of 66 and Marquette finishing 24 of 57. The Bulldogs found a slight edge from beyond the arc, making 8 of 26 three-point attempts compared to Marquette’s 6 of 17. Gonzaga was also more efficient from the free-throw line, converting 9 of 11 attempts while Marquette made 7 of 12.

Turnovers and ball security played a crucial role. Gonzaga committed 18 turnovers, but Marquette was unable to fully capitalize, giving the ball away 14 times themselves. The Golden Eagles did record 8 steals, led by Vice and Kennedi Perkins, who had two each. Gonzaga’s work on the offensive glass was a significant factor, as they secured 12 offensive rebounds, led by Whittaker’s efforts, which led to crucial second-chance opportunities.

The game was part of a multi-team event in Fort Myers and was played before an announced attendance of 252.

With the result, Marquette’s record moves to 4-3 on the young season. The Golden Eagles will look to rebound when they open Big East Conference play on the road against DePaul on Thursday.

Gonzaga evens its record at 4-4 with the hard-fought victory. The Bulldogs return home to Spokane to face Grand Canyon on Thursday as they continue their non-conference schedule.
