Belmont at Northern Iowa
Preview: Belmont Bruins at Northern Iowa Panthers
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Interstat) — The Belmont Bruins and Northern Iowa Panthers meet in a pivotal Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball matchup Saturday at McLeod Center, with both teams seeking consistency as the regular season enters its final month.
The visiting Bruins (13-9 overall) arrive with momentum after a decisive 67-52 road win at Drake on Thursday. Guard Jailyn Banks powered that victory with 26 points, continuing her strong recent form. Over her last three games, Banks is averaging 19.3 points, including a 20-point effort in an overtime win at Evansville on Jan. 29.
Northern Iowa (11-11), however, looks to rebound from a disappointing 69-47 loss at Bradley on Thursday. The Panthers’ performance was a stark contrast to their previous outing, a 66-56 win at Drake on Feb. 1, which showcased their considerable potential.
A key storyline will be the play of Northern Iowa forward Ryley Goebel, who recorded a rare triple-double in the Drake win with 18 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocks. Containing Goebel will be a primary focus for Belmont; she scored 14 points with seven rebounds in the first meeting this season. That Jan. 11 contest in Nashville saw the Bruins dominate, winning 81-62.
The Panthers have been a streaky team at home, with recent results including a 22-point win over Murray State followed by a narrow loss to Evansville. Belmont has shown similar volatility, sandwiching a home loss to Murray State between road wins at Drake and Evansville.
Saturday’s contest represents a critical opportunity for both squads. A win would give Belmont a season sweep and solidify its position in the upper half of the conference standings. For Northern Iowa, protecting its home court is essential to climb back to .500 and gain momentum for the final stretch.
Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon in Cedar Falls.
