Belmont Tops Northern Iowa in Women’s Basketball
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Interstat) — The Belmont Bruins used a methodical offensive performance and a decisive fourth-quarter surge to secure a 70-58 victory over the Northern Iowa Panthers in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at McLeod Center.
In a contest defined by defensive pressure and sporadic scoring runs, Belmont steadily built its lead throughout the second half before pulling away in the final period. The Bruins improved to 14-9 overall, while Northern Iowa fell to 11-12.
The game’s pivotal sequence arrived early in the fourth quarter. Leading 48-40 after three periods, Belmont opened the final frame with an 8-0 run in just over two minutes, effectively putting the game out of reach. The burst was fueled by interior scoring, starting with Quinn Eubank’s layup off an assist from KK Brodie. Jailyn Banks followed with a jump shot, and after a Northern Iowa miss, Eubank converted another layup, this time assisted by Banks. Tuti Jones then capped the run with a steal and a transition opportunity that extended the Belmont advantage to 56-40.
Northern Iowa, which struggled to find consistent offense outside of brief flurries, could not mount a sustained response. The Panthers shot just 39.6% from the field for the game and 33.3% from three-point range. While they converted 11 of 12 free throws, they were unable to string together enough stops to seriously threaten the Bruins down the stretch.
Belmont’s offensive efficiency proved to be the difference. The Bruins shot 54.2% from the floor and 43.5% from beyond the arc. They scored 70 points on just 62 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 113.5, a mark that underscored their effective shot selection and ability to handle Northern Iowa’s defensive pressure despite committing 12 turnovers.
Tuti Jones led all scorers for Belmont with 18 points, adding 4 rebounds in 34 minutes. KK Brodie provided a strong interior presence with 11 points and 7 rebounds. The Bruins’ offense was expertly directed by Jailyn Banks, who orchestrated the attack with 14 points and a game-high 7 assists.
Northern Iowa was led by Ryley Goebel and Jenna Twedt, who each scored 15 points. Goebel added 3 rebounds and 3 assists, while Twedt contributed 2 rebounds. Elise Jaeger controlled the glass for the Panthers, pulling down 11 rebounds to go with 5 points and 4 assists.
The first half was a tightly contested affair, with Belmont taking a 31-28 lead into halftime. Northern Iowa stayed close early behind the three-point shooting of Twedt and Kaylynn Janes, but the Bruins closed the second quarter with a critical three-pointer from Jones to establish the slim margin.
The third quarter saw Belmont begin to create separation, outscoring Northern Iowa 17-12. The Bruins’ defense tightened, limiting the Panthers to 4-of-13 shooting in the period while building the eight-point lead that set the stage for the decisive fourth-quarter run.
Belmont won the battle in the paint, outscoring Northern Iowa 22-16, and despite turning the ball over more frequently, the Bruins limited the damage by holding the Panthers to a 97.2 offensive rating. Northern Iowa did capitalize on Belmont’s miscues, scoring 15 points off turnovers compared to Belmont’s 9.
The announced attendance was 2,540 at McLeod Center. The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Belmont, which defeated Northern Iowa 81-62 in Nashville on Jan. 11.
Belmont next hosts Illinois-Chicago on Friday, Feb. 13. Northern Iowa returns to action at home against Indiana State on Thursday, Feb. 12.
