Nelson’s 32 Points Lead Bradley Past Drake in Missouri Valley Showdown
PEORIA, Ill. (Interstat) — In a high-octane Missouri Valley Conference clash defined by a career-defining performance, the Bradley Braves outlasted the Drake Bulldogs 85-79 in women’s basketball on Thursday night at Carver Arena.
The game, witnessed by 862 fans, evolved into a showcase for Bradley guard Kaylen Nelson. The junior from Tulsa, Oklahoma, poured in a game-high 32 points, leading a relentless offensive effort that kept the Braves a step ahead of a persistent Drake squad throughout the night. Nelson’s scoring barrage, which included four 3-pointers, proved to be the decisive factor in a contest where neither team led by more than nine points.
Bradley, improving to 14-7 overall, set the tone early with a 20-point first quarter, capitalizing on a series of Drake turnovers to build a lead it would never fully relinquish. The Bulldogs, who fell to 6-14, struggled with ball security at the outset, allowing the Braves to establish an 8-point advantage after the opening period.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the second quarter. Just as Drake began to find its rhythm, cutting into the deficit, Nelson ignited. She spearheaded a 13-4 Bradley run late in the period, hitting a trio of crucial shots, including two 3-pointers, to stretch the Braves’ lead to 44-38 at halftime. This surge provided Bradley with a crucial cushion it would repeatedly draw upon.
Drake refused to capitulate. A 9-2 run in the third quarter, fueled by the interior play of reserve forward Taedyn Gray, brought the Bulldogs within a single possession at 52-49. Gray, a sophomore from Lenexa, Kansas, provided a massive spark off the bench, scoring all 13 of her points in the second half. However, each time Drake threatened, Bradley had an answer, often from Nelson or fellow guard Mya Wardle.
Wardle, a Peoria native, orchestrated the Braves’ offense with precision, finishing with 12 points and a game-high six assists. Her backcourt partner, Tamia Perryman, added 11 points and six assists, forming a dynamic trio with Nelson that Drake struggled to contain.
The fourth quarter became a tense, back-and-forth affair. Drake’s Anna Becker, who finished with 13 points and five assists, and Lexi Carlsen, who added 12 points, consistently made plays to keep the pressure on. A 3-pointer from Drake’s Grace Knutson with 4:42 remaining cut Bradley’s lead to 73-72, sending a ripple of tension through the home crowd.
Once again, Bradley responded under pressure. Following a timeout, the Braves executed a decisive 7-0 run. It was capped by a driving layup from Amy O’Hara, who contributed 12 points and two blocks, pushing the lead back to 80-72 with just over a minute to play. Drake managed one final push, closing to within four points in the final 30 seconds, but Bradley sealed the victory at the free-throw line.
The game was a stark contrast in season trajectories. Bradley solidified its position in the upper tier of the conference, while Drake’s hard-fought effort added another narrow defeat to a challenging season. The Braves’ offensive balance, with four players in double figures, ultimately overpowered a Drake team that placed five in double digits but could not find enough consecutive stops.
Bradley’s victory also completed a regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs, having won the previous meeting in Des Moines two weeks prior. The game was projected to be a close one by advanced metrics, but Nelson’s extraordinary individual performance tipped the scales decisively in favor of the home team.
Both teams return to Missouri Valley Conference action on Sunday. Bradley travels to face Illinois State, while Drake returns home to host Northern Iowa.
