Grambling at Louisiana-Monroe
MONROE, La. (Interstat) — The Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks used a dominant second-quarter surge to pull away from the Grambling Lady Tigers and remain undefeated with a 74-55 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Tuesday night at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
In a contest witnessed by 2,242 fans, the Warhawks improved to 3-0 on the young season, while Grambling fell to 1-3.
The game was tightly contested through the opening period, with Louisiana-Monroe holding a narrow 13-10 lead. The complexion of the game changed entirely in the second quarter, as the Warhawks erupted for 28 points while holding Grambling to 15, building a 41-25 halftime advantage that they would not relinquish.
J’Mani Ingram led a balanced Louisiana-Monroe attack with 16 points and six rebounds. She was one of six Warhawks to score at least nine points, highlighting the team’s depth. Marcavia Shavers added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Nakiyah Mays-Prince contributed 11 points and four assists. Keshunti Nichols and Asjah Inniss each chipped in 11 points, and Asia Barclay filled the stat sheet with six points, seven rebounds and two assists.
Grambling was led by Shaniah Nunn, who posted a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Claire Simmons was the only other Lady Tiger in double figures, finishing with seven points.
The Warhawks’ victory was fueled by superior shooting and interior dominance. Louisiana-Monroe connected on 27 of 58 field goal attempts, a 46.6 percent clip, while Grambling struggled mightily from the floor, making just 18 of 62 shots for 29 percent. The Warhawks also owned the paint, outscoring Grambling 40-16 on points from close range.
Both teams struggled from beyond the arc and the free-throw line. Grambling made 5 of 24 three-point attempts, and Louisiana-Monroe hit just 2 of 8. From the charity stripe, the Lady Tigers were 13 of 25, and the Warhawks were 18 of 30.
Defensively, Louisiana-Monroe was active, recording 13 steals and forcing 20 Grambling turnovers. The Warhawks also dished out 13 assists on their 27 made baskets. Grambling managed eight steals and six blocks but was hampered by their own ball security and inefficient offense.
After extending their lead in the third quarter, the Warhawks maintained control throughout the final period, matching Grambling’s 15 points to close out the 19-point victory.
The Warhawks look to continue their unbeaten streak on the road Sunday at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Grambling, meanwhile, faces a tough road test Sunday at Arizona.
