Andersen Leads Fairfield to Road Win Over Marist
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Fairfield Stags used a dominant defensive performance in the second quarter to seize control and never looked back, defeating the Marist Red Foxes in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday afternoon at McCann Recreation Center.
Fairfield, which entered the contest with a 96.3% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, improved to 13-3 overall and 4-0 in the MAAC. Marist fell to 6-11 and 2-3 in conference play.
The game’s pivotal stretch came in the second period. Leading 13-12 after a competitive first quarter, the Stags locked down the Red Foxes, holding the home team to just five points on 2-of-12 shooting from the floor over the next 10 minutes. Meanwhile, Fairfield’s offense found a rhythm, scoring 15 points to take a 28-17 lead into halftime. The Stags’ defense forced eight Marist turnovers in the first half, converting them into 10 points.
Fairfield’s lead ballooned to 19 points late in the third quarter before Marist mounted a modest comeback attempt in the fourth, outscoring the Stags 17-16 in the final frame. However, the Red Foxes never got closer than 12 points down the stretch as Fairfield consistently answered with key baskets to secure the victory.
The Stags were led by a balanced offensive effort. Guard Kaety L’Amoreaux, a 5-foot-6 sophomore from Endwell, New York, paced all scorers with 19 points, adding five rebounds. Forward Meghan Andersen, a 6-1 sophomore from Wantagh, New York, recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds in 31 minutes. Guard Jillian Huerter, a 6-foot sophomore from Clifton Park, New York, filled the stat sheet with 13 points, five assists and two blocks.
Fairfield’s defensive intensity was reflected across the box score. The Stags held Marist to an offensive rating of 71.8 points per 100 possessions, well below their own mark of 88.6. Fairfield also dominated the glass, outrebounding Marist 41-30 and grabbing six offensive rebounds to Marist’s two. The Stags blocked four shots and recorded eight steals.
For Marist, guard Danielle Williamsen, a 5-7 senior from Staten Island, New York, led the way with 15 points. Forward Justine Henry, a 6-foot senior from Long Island, New York, added 11 points and eight rebounds. Forward Ciara Croker, a 6-foot senior from New Rochelle, New York, pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to go with six points.
The Stags shot 38.9% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range, while Marist finished at 36.7% from the floor and 33.3% from beyond the arc. Fairfield also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 12 of 15 attempts compared to Marist’s 7-of-11 performance.
The most important part of the game was unquestionably Fairfield’s second-quarter defensive stand. After a back-and-forth opening period where Marist’s Danielle Williamsen hit two early three-pointers to keep pace, the Stags elevated their pressure. They disrupted passing lanes, contested every shot, and capitalized on Marist’s mistakes. This stretch turned a one-point game into a double-digit deficit from which the Red Foxes, struggling offensively throughout the season, could not recover. It established the tone and provided the cushion that allowed Fairfield to manage the game comfortably through the second half.
The announced attendance was 2,788.
Fairfield will look to continue its strong conference start when it hosts Manhattan on Saturday. Marist travels to face Quinnipiac the same day.
