UConn Women Dominate Xavier in Lopsided Big East Conference Matchup

CINCINNATI (Interstat) — The Connecticut Huskies delivered a performance of historic dominance on Sunday, overwhelming the Xavier Musketeers in a lopsided Big East women’s basketball contest at Cintas Center.

From the opening tip, the Huskies imposed their will, building a commanding lead by the end of the first quarter and never relenting en route to a decisive victory that improved their record to a perfect 7-0. The Musketeers, playing before a home crowd of 3,536, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against a relentless Connecticut defense, falling to 4-3 on the season.

The game was effectively decided in the first half. Connecticut established control early, leading 22-9 after the first quarter. The offensive onslaught continued in the second period as the Huskies poured in 27 more points, taking a 49-25 advantage into the halftime break. The Huskies’ offense operated with stunning efficiency, while their defense smothered Xavier at every turn.

Any lingering doubt was erased in a third-quarter explosion where Connecticut outscored Xavier 35-11, turning the contest into a rout. The Huskies’ depth and talent were on full display as they cruised through the final quarter to seal the win.

The statistical disparity was staggering and illustrated the comprehensive nature of Connecticut’s performance. The Huskies shot 50 percent from the field and an impressive 50 percent from three-point range, connecting on 18 of 36 attempts from beyond the arc. Xavier, by contrast, managed to make only 10 field goals all game, shooting a frigid 21.7 percent from the floor.

Defense was the cornerstone of the victory. Connecticut’s relentless pressure forced Xavier into 28 turnovers, which the Huskies converted into 42 points. Connecticut also recorded 20 steals, nearly shutting down the Musketeers’ offensive sets entirely. The Huskies also shared the ball brilliantly, tallying 20 assists compared to just four for Xavier.

The win was a collective effort for Connecticut, with a balanced scoring attack and contributions from across the roster. Sarah Strong, a 6-foot-2 freshman from Durham, North Carolina, orchestrated the offense with a versatile stat line of 14 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Allie Ziebell, a 6-foot guard from Neenah, Wisconsin, provided a potent scoring punch off the bench, leading all scorers with 16 points in just 16 minutes of play.

Other key contributors for the Huskies included Ashlynn Shade with 14 points, Azzi Fudd with 12 points and three assists, and Serah Williams, who added 10 points and six rebounds. KK Arnold facilitated the offense with five assists, while Kayleigh Heckel filled the box score with 10 points and seven rebounds.

For Xavier, Vivien Nejašmić of Split, Croatia, was a bright spot, finishing with 12 points and four rebounds. MacKenzie Givens, a hometown player from Cincinnati, added nine points, six rebounds and two blocks. Mariyah Noel also chipped in nine points for the Musketeers.

The victory extends Connecticut’s dominant start to the season, which includes previous decisive wins over Utah, Michigan, and Ohio State. The Huskies look to continue their winning ways on the road against South Florida on Tuesday. Xavier, seeking to rebound from the loss, will next host Providence on Thursday.
