Bonnies Outlast Rams in High-Scoring A-10 Finale

KNAPP CREEK, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a game defined by contrasting offensive philosophies and a decisive final-quarter surge, the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies defeated the Fordham Rams 77-69 in an Atlantic 10 women’s basketball matchup on Saturday at Reilly Center.

The Bonnies, who improved to 16-14 overall, leaned heavily on the scoring efficiency of their backcourt and a parade to the free-throw line to secure the victory. The Rams, falling to 10-19, relied on volume three-point shooting and defensive pressure but could not overcome a significant disparity in shooting accuracy and free-throw attempts.

Fordham established an early rhythm, leading 16-14 after the first quarter behind a pair of three-pointers from Alexis Black. The game tightened considerably in a defensively oriented second quarter, where the Rams managed only seven points. Saint Bonaventure capitalized, using a 12-2 run to close the half and take a 33-23 lead into the break. The Bonnies’ defense held Fordham to 2-of-13 shooting in the period.

The Rams emerged from halftime with renewed energy, unleashing a 22-point third quarter fueled by the long ball. Consecutive three-pointers from Lakresha Edwards and Carryn Easley sparked a 13-2 run that brought Fordham within a single point at 41-40. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter, with Saint Bonaventure clinging to a 49-45 advantage heading to the final period.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the fourth quarter, where Saint Bonaventure’s offensive execution and composure at the line proved insurmountable. After Fordham’s Tia Morgan hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 56-52 with just over eight minutes remaining, the Bonnies responded with a critical 8-0 run. Laycee Drake and Mackenzie Pettinelli each contributed four points during the surge, pushing the lead back to 12 and forcing a Fordham timeout.

Fordham made one final push, closing to within 71-67 on another Morgan three-pointer with 1:47 left. From that point forward, the game was decided at the free-throw line. Saint Bonaventure, shooting a remarkable 96% from the stripe, closed the game by making their final six free throws in the last 32 seconds to seal the victory. The Bonnies scored 28 points in the fourth quarter, with 14 coming from the foul line.

The statistical story highlighted the divergent paths to scoring. Saint Bonaventure’s offense was ruthlessly efficient, shooting 54.5% from the field (24 of 44) and a near-perfect 25 of 26 from the free-throw line. Fordham, by contrast, attempted 21 more shots but made one fewer, finishing at 38.5% (25 of 65). The Rams stayed competitive by hitting 14 three-pointers and forcing 21 Bonnies turnovers, but were hampered by 15 turnovers of their own and a stark disadvantage in free-throw attempts, attempting only five.

Saint Bonaventure was led by a stellar performance from guard Laycee Drake, who scored a game-high 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting and added three assists. Aaliyah Parker contributed 23 points, three assists and a block, while Mackenzie Pettinelli added 18 points. The trio combined to shoot 20 of 33 from the field.

Fordham’s effort was led by Alexis Black with 18 points and three assists. Tia Morgan provided a spark off the bench with 15 points, all in the second half, including four three-pointers. Lakresha Edwards added 13 points, and Ornella Niankan chipped in 10 points.

The game was a reversal of the teams’ January meeting, which Fordham won by 13 points in the Bronx. An announced crowd of 357 at the Reilly Center watched the Bonnies even the season series and move above .500 in conference play.
