Saint Louis Surges Past La Salle in Fourth Quarter

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — In a grinding Atlantic 10 contest defined more by defensive pressure and free throws than fluid offense, the Saint Louis Billikens used a dominant fourth-quarter performance to secure a 66-57 road victory over the La Salle Explorers on Wednesday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena.

The game turned decisively in the final period. After trailing by as many as eight points in the third quarter and entering the fourth down 50-37, Saint Louis unleashed a 29-7 run over the final 10 minutes to stun the home crowd of 850. The Billikens held La Salle to just two made field goals in the quarter, forcing the Explorers into a series of rushed shots and turnovers while methodically attacking the basket to draw fouls.

Saint Louis center Alyssa Koerkenmeier, a 6-foot-6 sophomore from Saint Rose, Illinois, anchored the comeback with a commanding double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds, adding a block in 34 minutes. Her interior presence on both ends was pivotal as La Salle’s offense collapsed. Guard Jahda Denis of Montreal provided a critical scoring spark off the bench, netting 18 of her points in the second half, including 10 in the fourth quarter alone. Zya Nugent of Denison, Texas, added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Billikens.

La Salle was led by Ashleigh Connor of Pittsburgh, who scored a game-high 25 points to go with eight rebounds. Aryss Macktoon of Baltimore contributed 18 points and eight rebounds, but the Explorers’ offense faltered badly down the stretch, managing only seven points in the final quarter.

The contest was a stark display of offensive struggle for both teams. Saint Louis failed to connect on any of its 15 attempts from three-point range, marking a rare afternoon without a triple. La Salle was only marginally better, shooting 3 for 20 from deep. The difference came at the foul line, where the Billikens attempted 31 free throws, making 24, compared to La Salle’s 22 attempts and 14 makes.

Turnovers and defense told the story. The teams combined for 42 turnovers, with La Salle committing 20 and Saint Louis 22. The Billikens, however, capitalized more effectively on La Salle’s mistakes and tightened their defense when it mattered most. Saint Louis finished with an 80.8 offensive rating on 82 possessions, while La Salle posted a 73.6 rating on 77 possessions.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair. La Salle held a narrow 15-13 lead after one quarter before Saint Louis found a rhythm in the second. The Billikens outscored the Explorers 24-16 in the period, fueled by Denis and Koerkenmeier, to take a 37-31 advantage into halftime.

The third quarter belonged entirely to La Salle. The Explorers opened the period on a 19-2 run, spearheaded by Connor and Macktoon, to seize a 50-39 lead. Saint Louis went scoreless for over six minutes and managed only nine points in the quarter, appearing to unravel under La Salle’s defensive pressure. The Explorers took a 50-46 lead into the final frame, setting the stage for the Billikens’ dramatic reversal.

The most important sequence of the game came early in the fourth quarter as Saint Louis began its decisive push. With La Salle leading 52-48, the Billikens strung together stops and scores. A layup by Jada Tiggett, followed by a driving score from Denis and a putback by Koerkenmeier, ignited a 14-0 run that gave Saint Louis a 62-52 lead with just over three minutes to play. La Salle went scoreless for nearly seven minutes, missing eight consecutive field goal attempts during the Billikens’ surge, and never recovered.

With the win, Saint Louis improves to 9-10 overall. The Billikens, who had lost three straight conference games entering Wednesday, will host Dayton on Sunday. La Salle, which saw a two-game winning streak snapped, falls to 10-7. The Explorers will host Davidson on Sunday. According to Interstat’s ELO system, La Salle had entered the game with a 60.2 percent probability to win.
