Fordham Rams Dominate Long Island Sharks in Women’s Basketball Matchup
BRONX, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Fordham Rams secured a decisive 72-51 victory over the Long Island Sharks in a non-conference women’s basketball matchup Sunday at a raucous Rose Hill Gym.
The Rams improved to 6-3 on the season, using a dominant performance on the glass and a relentless defensive effort to stifle the Sharks, who fell to 4-2. Fordham’s ability to control the paint and capitalize on Long Island’s mistakes proved to be the difference.
From the opening tip, Fordham established its defensive identity. The Rams forced the Sharks into a staggering 24 turnovers, converting them into 12 points. While Fordham also struggled with ball security, committing 19 turnovers of their own, their defense consistently disrupted Long Island’s offensive flow.
The Sharks’ offensive woes were stark. They shot just 29.4 percent from the floor, managing only 15 field goals on 51 attempts. Their offensive rating of 65.0 on 78 possessions underscored the difficulty of finding quality shots against the Rams’ set defense. Fordham, by contrast, operated more efficiently, posting an offensive rating of 96.1 by shooting 41.7 percent from the field and a stellar 82.6 percent from the free-throw line.
A pivotal factor was Fordham’s commanding rebounding advantage, particularly on the offensive glass. The Rams hauled in 15 offensive rebounds, leading to multiple second-chance opportunities and a dominant 34-14 advantage in points in the paint. Long Island managed only six offensive boards.
The Rams built their lead steadily throughout the first half. After a back-and-forth opening few minutes, Fordham closed the first quarter on a 15-2 run to take a 22-9 lead, a margin from which the Sharks would never recover. The Rams extended their lead to 39-22 by halftime and continued to apply pressure in the second half, never allowing Long Island to mount a serious challenge.
Kadidia Toure of Long Island delivered a standout individual performance in the losing effort. The 6-foot-3 sophomore from Silver Spring, Maryland, scored 19 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out two assists and blocked three shots in 28 minutes of action. Her presence inside was a rare bright spot for the Sharks’ offense.
Fordham’s victory was a testament to its balanced scoring attack and depth. Alexis Black, a 5-foot-9 guard from Washington, D.C., orchestrated the offense with 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Maysen Hill, a 5-foot-11 guard from Kingston, Rhode Island, also contributed 11 points and five rebounds.
The Rams’ international contingent made significant impacts. Ugne Sirtautaite, a 6-foot-1 forward from Kaunas, Lithuania, provided a spark off the bench with 12 points and five rebounds. Montreal native Ornella Niankan added eight points and six rebounds, while London’s Precious Omoshola chipped in 10 points and five rebounds. Brooklyn native Kaila Berry controlled the glass, pulling down six rebounds to go with two points.
For Long Island, guard Solangelei Akridge of Spring Valley, California, provided secondary scoring with seven points.
The game was part of a challenging early-season slate for both teams. Fordham entered the contest having won two of its last three, including a road victory at Niagara. Long Island saw a three-game winning streak snapped after previous wins over American, Delaware State and Kean.
Looking ahead, Fordham travels to face George Mason on Wednesday before a Saturday matchup at Hofstra. Long Island returns home to host Rider on Tuesday before embarking on a three-game road trip with contests at Dayton, Xavier and Massachusetts-Lowell.
