Air Force at UC San Diego
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The UC San Diego Tritons used a dominant first-quarter performance to build an insurmountable lead and held off a late push from the Air Force Falcons to secure a 55-43 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at RIMAC Arena.
A crowd of 1,282 watched as the Tritons exploded for 22 points in the opening period while holding the Falcons to just four, a deficit from which Air Force could not recover. The Falcons mounted a 19-point fourth-quarter rally, but it was not enough to overcome the early struggles.
UC San Diego improved its season record to 2-3, while Air Force evened its mark at 3-3.
The game was decided in the opening minutes. The Tritons won the opening tip and never looked back, starting the game on a 22-4 run. Erin Condron, a 6-foot-4 center from Woodend, Australia, was a force inside early, controlling the paint on both ends of the floor. She finished with 12 points, three assists and three blocks.
Air Force’s offensive woes were stark in the first half, as the team managed only 14 points by the break, trailing 32-14. The Falcons shot poorly from the field and committed numerous turnovers against a active UC San Diego defense.
The Tritons’ offense was fueled by balanced scoring and crisp ball movement. Makayla Rose of Roseville, California, led the way with a team-high 11 points and dished out five assists. Lev Feiman from Woodland Hills, California, added 10 points and three assists, while Rosa Smith of Kirkland, Washington, chipped in nine points.
For Air Force, Milahnie Perry, a 5-foot-7 guard from Tampa, Florida, shouldered the scoring load with a game-high 15 points. Jayda McNabb, a 5-foot-10 guard from Rapid City, South Dakota, contributed 10 points, two assists and two blocks in the losing effort.
The Falcons showed life in the final frame, outscoring the Tritons 19-17, but the margin proved too large to close. UC San Diego managed the clock effectively in the game’s final minutes and hit key free throws to seal the victory.
The Tritons return to action Monday at home against Occidental. Air Force travels to face Florida Atlantic on Thursday.
