UC San Diego Tops Air Force in Women’s Basketball
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — A dominant first-quarter performance by the UC San Diego women’s basketball team proved too much for Air Force to overcome as the Tritons secured a 55-43 victory on Saturday night at RIMAC Arena.
The Tritons exploded out of the gate, opening the game on a 16-0 run and outscoring the Falcons 22-4 in the first quarter. UC San Diego’s stifling defense and efficient transition offense set the tone early, holding Air Force without a field goal for nearly the entire period. The Falcons did not register their first points until a Milahnie Perry jump shot with 6:16 remaining in the quarter.
Erin Condron, the 6-foot-4 center from Woodend, Australia, was instrumental in the opening blitz, controlling the paint on both ends. She won the opening tip and quickly established a presence with an early block and multiple offensive rebounds that led to second-chance points for the Tritons. The early deficit forced Air Force into a reactive mode from which they never fully recovered.
Air Force showed resilience in the second quarter, matching UC San Diego’s output with 10 points apiece to head into halftime trailing 32-14. The Falcons continued to battle in a low-scoring third quarter, which saw UC San Diego manage only six points, cutting the deficit to 38-24 heading into the final period.
The Falcons mounted their most significant challenge in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tritons 19-17. A 3-pointer from Bhret Clay and a layup from Jayda McNabb brought Air Force within single digits midway through the period, but they could not sustain the rally. Every time the Falcons threatened, the Tritons responded with a key basket to maintain their cushion.
UC San Diego was led by a balanced scoring effort. Erin Condron posted a team-high 12 points to go along with three assists and three blocks in 37 minutes of action. Makayla Rose of Roseville, California, filled the stat sheet with 11 points, five assists and a block, while Lev Feiman from Woodland Hills, California, added 10 points and three assists.
For Air Force, Milahnie Perry, a 5-foot-7 guard from Tampa, Florida, shouldered the offensive load, scoring a game-high 15 points. Jayda McNabb, a 5-foot-10 guard from Rapid City, South Dakota, contributed 10 points and two blocks in 32 minutes.
The victory improved UC San Diego’s season record to 2-3, while Air Force fell to an even 3-3. An announced crowd of 1,282 watched the non-conference matchup.
The game was a tale of two halves defined by the opening quarter. UC San Diego’s early offensive execution and defensive pressure created a margin that Air Force, despite a valiant late effort, could not erase. The Tritons’ ability to withstand the Falcons’ fourth-quarter push ensured they would snap their two-game losing streak.
Air Force will look to return to the win column when they travel to face Florida Atlantic on Thursday, Nov. 27. UC San Diego returns to action at home against Occidental on Monday, Nov. 24.
