Nevada at Saint Mary`s

MORAGA, Calif. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by turnovers and missed opportunities, the Saint Mary’s Gaels remained undefeated by holding off the Nevada Wolf Pack 56-50 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at McKeon Pavilion.

The game was a contest of contrasting efficiencies. Despite an identical number of possessions, 68 for each team, the Gaels leveraged a more effective offensive attack and a perfect performance from the free-throw line to secure the victory in front of 287 fans.

Saint Mary’s was propelled by a dominant performance from center Edie Clarke. The 6-foot-4 junior from Melbourne, Australia, scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed five rebounds, consistently finding success in the paint. Her presence inside was a key factor in the Gaels outscoring Nevada 36-24 in that area.

The Wolf Pack kept the game close through three quarters, trailing just 40-37 heading into the final period. However, the Gaels opened the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run, capped by a Mauriana Hashemian-Orr assist on a Clarke layup that gave Saint Mary’s a 48-39 lead with 7:20 remaining. Nevada would not get closer than four points the rest of the way.

Nevada’s offensive efforts were hampered by a staggering 25 turnovers, which the Gaels converted into 21 points. Saint Mary’s was only marginally better, committing 21 turnovers of its own, leading to a combined 46 giveaways in the game.

Ahrray Young led the Wolf Pack with 16 points. Chloe Williams added 11 points and four rebounds for Nevada, while Skylar Durley filled the stat sheet with seven points, six rebounds and five assists. Makayla Carter was a force on the glass, pulling down a game-high nine rebounds.

Beyond Clarke, the Gaels received balanced scoring. Addi Wedin scored 10 points, all in the first half, and Emily Foy came off the bench to contribute nine points and three rebounds. Hashemian-Orr, a guard from Portland, Oregon, provided a key playmaking spark with four assists.

The difference at the free-throw line was decisive. Saint Mary’s was a perfect 10 for 10 on its attempts, while Nevada struggled, converting just 8 of 13. From the field, the Gaels shot 44 percent, making 22 of 50 attempts. Nevada shot 37.5 percent, going 18 for 48. The Wolf Pack found more success from beyond the arc, hitting six three-pointers to the Gaels’ two.

With the loss, Nevada falls to 2-2 on the young season. The Wolf Pack will return home to face Alabama A&M on Friday. Saint Mary’s improves to 5-0 and will look to continue its strong start on the road against California on Thursday.
