Saint Mary’s Holds Off Nevada to Remain Undefeated

MORAGA, Calif. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by turnovers and missed opportunities, the Saint Mary’s Gaels remained undefeated Sunday by grinding out a 56-50 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack in a non-conference women’s basketball game at McKeon Pavilion.

The game, played before an intimate crowd of 287, was a contest of contrasting efficiencies. While neither team shot the ball exceptionally well, the Gaels’ perfect performance from the free-throw line and superior work in the paint proved to be the difference. Saint Mary’s improved its season record to 5-0, while Nevada evened its mark at 2-2.

The contest was characterized by a staggering 46 combined turnovers, with Nevada committing 25 and Saint Mary’s giving the ball away 21 times. Both teams recorded 12 steals, leading to a disjointed offensive flow throughout the afternoon. The Gaels capitalized more effectively on these miscues, scoring 21 points off turnovers compared to Nevada’s 16.

Saint Mary’s was led by a dominant performance from center Edie Clarke. The 6-foot-4 sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed five rebounds in 30 minutes of action. Her presence inside was a key factor in the Gaels outscoring Nevada 36-24 in the paint.

Nevada guard Ahrray Young, a Sacramento native, matched Clarke’s scoring output with 16 points of her own, including three shots from beyond the arc. Chloe Williams added 11 points for the Wolf Pack, and Makayla Carter pulled down a game-high nine rebounds despite scoring only a single point.

The game was tight from the opening tip, with Saint Mary’s holding a narrow 12-8 lead after a sloppy first quarter. The Gaels maintained their four-point advantage heading into halftime, leading 24-21 after both teams scored 12 points in the second period.

Nevada found its offensive rhythm briefly in the third quarter, matching Saint Mary’s with 16 points to keep the deficit at just three points, 40-37, heading into the final frame. However, the Gaels opened the fourth quarter with a decisive 8-2 run, fueled by layups from Mauriana Hashemian-Orr and Charlece Ohiaeri, to build a 48-39 lead with 7:20 remaining.

The Wolf Pack chipped away at the lead, closing the gap to 54-50 after a Chloe Williams hook shot with 1:39 left on the clock. Nevada had several chances to cut the deficit further but was plagued by critical turnovers in the final minutes. Saint Mary’s sealed the game at the free-throw line, with Malia Latu sinking two clutch shots with 29 seconds remaining to extend the lead to six and effectively put the game out of reach.

Saint Mary’s won despite a frigid shooting performance from three-point range, making only 2 of 12 attempts. Their victory was anchored by efficiency inside the arc and a flawless 10-for-10 showing from the charity stripe. Nevada, by contrast, shot 8 for 13 from the free-throw line and struggled with overall offensive execution, posting an offensive rating of 73.3 points per 100 possessions compared to Saint Mary’s 82.7.

Hashemian-Orr, a guard from Portland, Oregon, provided a crucial all-around effort for the Gaels with six points and a game-high four assists. For Nevada, Skylar Durley of Oklahoma City filled the stat sheet with seven points, six rebounds and five assists in 33 minutes.

The Gaels look to continue their unbeaten streak on the road against California on Thursday. Nevada returns home to face Alabama A&M on Friday.
