Campbell Rallies Past Furman in Women’s Basketball

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant second-quarter surge, the Campbell women’s basketball team secured a 68-61 victory over Furman on Sunday at Timmons Arena.

The Fighting Camels, who improved to 3-2, used a 23-point second quarter to erase an early deficit and build a lead they would not relinquish. The Paladins fell to 2-3 with the loss.

Campbell’s offense was ignited by a stellar performance from Jasmine Felton. The 5-foot-11 guard from Elizabeth City, N.C., poured in a game-high 24 points, adding six rebounds and two assists in 38 minutes of action. Her scoring was crucial in stabilizing the Campbell offense, particularly during a first quarter where Furman came out hot.

Furman established an early advantage, closing the first quarter with a 21-15 lead. The Paladins’ Clare Coyle was instrumental in the fast start, scoring 15 points and grabbing five rebounds for the game. However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the second period.

Campbell’s defense tightened, holding Furman to just 10 points in the quarter while its own offense found a rhythm. The Fighting Camels outscored the Paladins 23-10 in the frame, turning a six-point deficit into a 38-31 halftime lead. A key factor in the turnaround was Campbell’s ability to capitalize on mistakes, scoring 25 points off turnovers compared to just nine for Furman.

The third quarter saw both teams trade baskets, with Campbell maintaining its cushion by scoring 21 points to Furman’s 17. Olivia Tucker provided vital support for the Fighting Camels, finishing with 12 points and four assists. Campbell’s interior presence was bolstered by N’na Konate of Lausanne, Switzerland, who pulled down seven rebounds and blocked a shot in just 16 minutes of play.

Furman made a push in the final period, outscoring Campbell 13-9, but could never close the gap entirely. The Paladins were led by Coyle’s 15 points, while Chantelle Stuart of Scarborough, Canada, contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Kyraha Parnell was a defensive force for Furman, recording four blocks.

Despite Furman holding a slight 34-30 advantage in points in the paint, Campbell’s efficiency in converting turnovers into points and a balanced scoring attack proved to be the difference. The Fighting Camels also received contributions from Jasmine Nivar, who had seven points and five rebounds, and Gianni Boone, who added six points.

The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 397. Campbell will look to build on the win when it travels to face Northern Colorado on Nov. 21 in Chicago. Furman aims to rebound on the road against Radford on Nov. 19.
