UC San Diego Uses Dominant Third Quarter to Roll Past Denver
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — A dominant third-quarter explosion propelled the UC San Diego women’s basketball team to a decisive 72-54 victory over the Denver Pioneers on Friday night at RIMAC Arena.
The Tritons, playing their home opener, outscored the Pioneers 31-16 in the pivotal third period, turning a closely contested game into a comfortable lead they would not relinquish. The win improved UC San Diego’s early season record to one win and one loss, while Denver remained winless at zero and two.
The game was a tale of two halves, with the first half offering little indication of the onslaught to come. Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm, with the first quarter ending with UC San Diego holding a narrow 12-9 advantage. The second quarter saw more of the same, as the teams played to a 16-16 stalemate, sending the Tritons into the halftime break with a 28-25 lead.
The contest was fundamentally transformed in the third quarter. UC San Diego’s offense ignited, efficiently scoring from the floor and capitalizing on a slew of Denver mistakes. The Tritons’ defense was equally formidable, creating turnovers and contesting nearly every shot. By the time the quarter ended, the momentum had swung entirely in favor of the home team, and the outcome was effectively sealed.
UC San Diego’s victory was a product of superior execution in nearly every facet of the game. The Tritons shot 41 percent from the floor compared to Denver’s 30 percent. While three-point shooting was relatively even, UC San Diego held a significant advantage from the free-throw line, converting 11 of 13 attempts while Denver struggled, making only 18 of 33.
The statistical sheet underscored UC San Diego’s cohesive team performance. The Tritons dished out 11 assists to Denver’s three and recorded 11 steals against the Pioneers’ three. Denver was plagued by ball control issues, committing 20 turnovers, which the Tritons frequently converted into points. UC San Diego also won the battle in the paint, out-rebounding the Pioneers on the offensive glass 11 to 15, though Denver held a slight edge in total rebounds.
Sabrina Ma led all scorers for UC San Diego, pouring in 19 points and adding four rebounds in 23 minutes of action. The Tritons’ offensive effort, however, was balanced, with key contributions coming from across the roster. Lev Feiman added nine points, while Rosa Smith chipped in five points and four rebounds in just 14 minutes off the bench.
While Ma provided the scoring punch, Dymonique Maxie was a force on the boards, pulling down a game-high eight rebounds to go with four points and three assists in 32 minutes. Defensively, Erin Condron anchored the paint with three blocked shots.
For the Denver Pioneers, the search for their first win of the season continues. Coryn Watts was a bright spot in the loss, leading her team with 15 points and adding four rebounds and two assists in 29 minutes. The Pioneers’ offensive struggles, however, were too significant to overcome, as evidenced by their low assist total and poor shooting percentages.
The game unfolded largely as predicted by statistical models. Interstat’s ELO system had projected UC San Diego with a 91 percent probability to win, a forecast that proved accurate after the Tritons’ second-half surge.
The victory gives UC San Diego a positive start to its home schedule after a narrow three-point road loss to Pacific to open the season. The Tritons will look to build on this momentum when they host Sacramento State on Wednesday, November 12.
Denver, which opened its season with a 59-50 loss to Air Force, faces a quick turnaround. The Pioneers continue their West Coast road trip with a game at Loyola Marymount on Sunday, November 9, as they seek to notch their first victory.
An announced crowd of 1,292 at RIMAC Arena witnessed the Tritons’ home debut and their first win of the 2025-2026 campaign. The team’s schedule remains challenging, with future non-conference matchups against San Francisco, Washington, and California Baptist on the horizon.
For now, UC San Diego can reflect on a performance defined by a game-changing third quarter and a comprehensive team effort that secured a convincing 18-point victory.
