Uhrich’s 30 Points Lead Southern Utah Past Texas-Arlington
CEDAR CITY, Utah (Interstat) — Ava Uhrich scored 30 points and Southern Utah used a dominant first quarter to build a cushion it would never fully relinquish, holding off a persistent Texas-Arlington rally for a 77-68 victory in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Thursday night at Centrum Arena.
The Thunderbirds (14-7) sprinted to a 21-13 lead after the opening period, capitalizing on early Maverick turnovers and cold shooting. Uhrich, a 6-foot guard from Burlingame, California, was instrumental from the start, scoring nine points in the first quarter. Southern Utah’s early burst proved critical, as Texas-Arlington (8-12) spent the remainder of the game chipping away but could never draw even.
The Mavericks, led by a game-high 27 points from guard Nya Threatt of Missouri City, Texas, whittled the deficit to four points on multiple occasions in the second half. A driving layup by Threatt with 1:56 remaining in the third quarter brought UTA within 46-44, capping a period where the Mavericks outscored the Thunderbirds 23-24. But each time Texas-Arlington threatened, Southern Utah had an answer, often from Uhrich or forward Brooklyn Fely, who finished with 12 points and four assists.
The most important sequence of the game came early in the fourth quarter with Southern Utah leading 55-50. The Mavericks, who had forced 20 Thunderbird turnovers, had several opportunities to cut further into the lead but came up empty on consecutive possessions. Southern Utah then delivered a decisive 7-0 run. Uhrich hit a jumper, was fouled on the next possession and made two free throws, and then Fely found Kortney Doman for a layup to push the advantage to 64-55 with 5:09 to play, effectively sealing the outcome.
Texas-Arlington’s comeback efforts were hampered by offensive struggles beyond Threatt’s scoring. The team shot just 38.3% from the field and a paltry 22.2% from three-point range. While they attempted more free throws, making 20 of 27, they were outrebounded 38-30 and allowed Southern Utah to grab 10 offensive boards. The Mavericks’ defensive pressure was notable, generating 12 steals and blocking five shots, but they could not overcome their own 13 turnovers and the Thunderbirds’ superior efficiency, as Southern Utah posted an offensive rating of 93.6 to UTA’s 85.2.
Uhrich’s 30-point performance on 9-of-15 shooting, supplemented by 10-of-12 from the foul line, was her highest scoring output in recent weeks, showcasing her ability to carry the offensive load. She added four assists and a block. Sierra Chambers provided steady play for Southern Utah with 11 points and six assists in 39 minutes.
For Texas-Arlington, Threatt’s 27 points came on 10-of-21 shooting, and she added three steals. Alexsyah Goudeau contributed nine points off the bench, and Kira Reynolds added seven points, two assists and two blocks. The Mavericks scored 15 points off turnovers but were outscored 38-34 in the paint.
The game was a rematch of a Jan. 3 contest in Arlington, which Southern Utah also won, 58-55. The Thunderbirds have now won three straight and seven of their last nine. Texas-Arlington has lost two of its last three.
Southern Utah returns to action Saturday at home against Abilene Christian. Texas-Arlington continues its road trip at California Baptist on Saturday.
