Sooners Dominate Aggies in SEC Women’s Basketball Showdown

NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — The Oklahoma women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance from start to finish, overwhelming Texas A&M 85-58 in a Southeastern Conference matchup Thursday night at Lloyd Noble Center.

The 17th-ranked Sooners, improving to 17-4 overall and solidifying their position in the conference race, never trailed. They established a double-digit lead by the end of the first quarter and methodically expanded it, showcasing a balanced and efficient offensive attack that the Aggies could not contain.

Oklahoma set the tone early, opening the game on a 10-2 run. While Texas A&M’s Lauren Ware answered with an early layup and Lemyah Hylton hit a three-pointer, the Sooners’ pressure and ball movement created consistent scoring opportunities. A 23-point first quarter gave Oklahoma a 23-18 lead, and they matched that output in the second period to take a 46-27 advantage into halftime. The Aggies managed only nine points in the second quarter, a stretch that effectively decided the contest.

The Sooners’ offensive execution was led by Payton Verhulst, who scored 16 points and dished out four assists. The 6-foot-1 guard from De Soto, Kansas, was instrumental in both half-court sets and transition. She was complemented by freshman standout Aaliyah Chavez of Lubbock, Texas, who added 14 points and five assists. Raegan Beers, the 6-foot-4 post from Littleton, Colorado, controlled the paint with 12 points, while Sahara Williams of Waterloo, Iowa, provided a versatile line of 12 points, five assists and a blocked shot. Caya Smith, a local product from Oklahoma City, also reached double figures with 11 points.

Texas A&M, which fell to 8-9, was led by Lauren Ware’s 15 points. The 6-foot-5 center from Bismarck, North Dakota, was a consistent presence inside but faced constant double-teams. Point guard Ny’Ceara Pryor of Baltimore contributed 12 points and five assists, and Fatmata Janneh of London, England, scored 10 points and recorded a block. The Aggies struggled with Oklahoma’s defensive intensity, committing numerous turnovers that the Sooners converted into easy baskets.

The third quarter saw Oklahoma extend its lead further, outscoring Texas A&M 24-15 to enter the final period with a 70-42 cushion. The Sooners’ lead ballooned to as many as 31 points in the fourth quarter before both teams emptied their benches.

A crowd of 4,624 watched as Oklahoma shot over 50% from the field for the game, while Texas A&M was held under 40%. The Sooners also dominated the assist column, recording 24 on their 34 made field goals, highlighting their unselfish, pass-first philosophy.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Oklahoma over Texas A&M, having also defeated the Aggies 72-50 in College Station on Jan. 1. It marked Oklahoma’s fifth win in its last six games, a stretch that includes an overtime victory over then-South Carolina.

Texas A&M has now lost four consecutive games and six of its last seven, a skid that began with the loss to Oklahoma at the start of the month. The Aggies will look to regroup quickly with a daunting home matchup against South Carolina looming on Monday.

Oklahoma, which entered the game as a 25.5-point favorite according to oddsmakers, next travels to face Texas on Sunday in another key conference showdown. The total score of 143 points surpassed the over/under line of 145.5.
