Preview: Saint Joseph’s Hawks at Saint Bonaventure Bonnies

KNAPP CREEK, N.Y. (Interstat) — A pivotal Atlantic 10 women’s basketball matchup is set for Wednesday night as the Saint Joseph’s Hawks visit the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies at the Reilly Center.

The Hawks (12-4, 3-1 A-10) enter with momentum, having won five of their last six games. Their most recent outing was a 69-60 home victory over La Salle on Saturday, led by 15 points from standout guard Gabby Casey. Saint Joseph’s boasts one of the league’s most potent offenses, scoring 78 points in a rout of Fordham on Jan. 3.

Casey has been the engine for the Hawks, averaging 15.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists over her last seven games. She recorded a near triple-double with 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the win at Fordham.

The Bonnies (11-6, 2-2) look to rebound on their home floor after a difficult 66-45 road loss at Rhode Island on Saturday. Saint Bonaventure has been strong defensively, holding opponents to 38 points in a win at Duquesne on Jan. 7, but has struggled in its two conference losses, falling by an average of 20.5 points.

Saint Bonaventure will rely on forward Laycee Drake, who is averaging 13.2 points and 6.4 rebounds over her last five contests. She scored a season-high 21 points in a narrow 54-53 win over George Washington on Dec. 31.

Recent history adds intrigue to this mid-January clash. The Hawks’ only conference loss came in a low-scoring 48-36 defeat at Davidson on Jan. 7, a game where they shot just 23.2% from the field. The Bonnies have shown resilience, with three of their six losses coming by five points or fewer earlier in the season.

Defense will be a key factor. Saint Bonaventure allows just 56.2 points per game, while Saint Joseph’s scores at a 70.2-point clip. Containing Casey will be the primary task for the Bonnies’ defense, while the Hawks must navigate a traditionally tough road environment at the Reilly Center.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. The game continues a critical stretch for both teams as they jockey for position in the Atlantic 10 standings ahead of the conference tournament.
