Saint Bonaventure Holds Off Saint Joseph’s in Defensive Atlantic 10 Battle
KNAPP CREEK, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Saint Bonaventure women’s basketball team, leaning on a disruptive defensive effort and timely scoring from its backcourt, secured a pivotal 57-48 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over Saint Joseph’s on Wednesday night at the Reilly Center.
In a game defined by grinding, physical play and offensive struggles, the Bonnies (12-6, 2-1 A-10) built an early lead and consistently held off every challenge from the Hawks (12-5, 2-1), who entered the contest as heavy favorites according to advanced metrics. The win, witnessed by an intimate crowd of 305, snapped a two-game conference skid for Saint Bonaventure while handing Saint Joseph’s its second loss in three league games.
The most critical phase of the contest unfolded in the game’s opening ten minutes. Saint Bonaventure set the tone immediately, with Laycee Drake converting a driving layup just over 90 seconds into the game for the first points. The Bonnies’ defense was stifling from the outset, forcing the Hawks into a series of rushed three-point attempts and turnovers. While Saint Joseph’s started an icy 1-for-7 from the field, the home team executed efficiently at the other end. An Elyse MacDonough three-pointer and a Gabby Robinson jump shot fueled a 9-0 run that gave Saint Bonaventure a 9-2 lead and forced the Hawks to play from behind all night.
Saint Joseph’s, which shot a dismal percentage overall, never found a consistent offensive rhythm. The Hawks were held to 10 points in the first quarter and trailed 17-10 after one. The Bonnies extended their lead to as many as 12 points in the second quarter following a Brillana Boyd three-pointer that made it 22-10. The Hawks’ primary offensive response came from guard Rhian Stokes, who scored a game-high 20 points, and Gabby Casey, who added 15. A late second-quarter push, capped by a Stokes jumper, brought Saint Joseph’s within 29-25 at halftime, offering a glimmer of hope.
That hope was systematically extinguished in the third quarter. Each time the Hawks threatened to draw closer, Saint Bonaventure answered. After Stokes hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 35-30, the Bonnies responded with a quick 6-0 spurt, highlighted by a Mackenzie Pettinelli jumper off a turnover and a Mallory Heise layup, to push the lead back to 11. The Hawks would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
The fourth quarter saw Saint Bonaventure expertly manage the clock and withstand Saint Joseph’s final desperate attempts. With the Hawks forced to foul in the closing minute, Aaliyah Parker calmly sank two free throws with 28 seconds remaining to seal the nine-point victory.
Parker was instrumental for the Bonnies, finishing with 11 points, four assists, and a game-high three steals, providing constant defensive pressure. Drake added 10 points and three assists, while Pettinelli chipped in 8 points. The Bonnies’ interior defense, led by Robinson’s three blocks, altered countless shots and contributed to Saint Joseph’s shooting woes.
Beyond Stokes and Casey, the Hawks received limited offensive support. Aleah Snead was the next highest scorer with just 6 points. The loss halted a positive momentum swing for Saint Joseph’s, which had convincingly beaten La Salle in its previous outing after a low-scoring loss at Davidson.
Saint Bonaventure, which had been routed at Rhode Island in its last game, displayed a resilient identity focused on defense and ball control. The victory provides a significant boost as the Bonnies prepare for a road test at Fordham on Sunday. Saint Joseph’s, meanwhile, must regroup quickly before hosting George Mason on Sunday, aiming to rediscover the offensive form that propelled it to a strong start this season.
