Villanova Dominates DePaul in Big East Women’s Basketball
ROSEMONT, Ill. (Interstat) — The Villanova Wildcats delivered a dominant defensive performance from the opening tip, overwhelming the DePaul Blue Demons in a lopsided 81-48 victory in a Big East Conference women’s basketball game Monday night at Allstate Arena.
The outcome was never in doubt as Villanova, improving to 11-2 overall, raced to a 20-7 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 42-19 by halftime. The Wildcats’ smothering defense held DePaul to just 19 points in the first half, setting the tone for the evening before an announced crowd of 1,420.
The most important part of the game was the opening quarter, where Villanova established immediate and total control. The Wildcats opened with a 14-0 run, capitalizing on DePaul’s offensive struggles. DePaul missed its first eight field goal attempts and committed four turnovers before finally scoring on a Gina Davorija free throw with 5:55 remaining in the period. By that point, Villanova had already built a 15-point advantage, fueled by early baskets from Jasmine Bascoe and a three-pointer from Kelsey Joens. Denae Carter set a defensive tone with two blocked shots on a single DePaul possession during the run, epitomizing the Wildcats’ intensity.
Brynn McCurry led a balanced Villanova attack with 18 points and seven assists. Kelsey Joens added 14 points, while Kennedy Henry contributed 11 points and six assists. Denae Carter filled the stat sheet with nine points, three assists and four blocked shots, anchoring the interior defense. Ryanne Allen also reached double figures with 10 points.
For DePaul, which fell to 3-12, Kate Novik scored 14 points and Gina Davorija added 10. The Blue Demons struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against Villanova’s pressure, shooting a frigid percentage from the floor.
Villanova’s offense was efficient throughout, scoring 42 points in the paint and assisting on the majority of its field goals. The Wildcats maintained their large lead through the second half, with the margin never dipping below 30 points for the entire fourth quarter.
The victory extends Villanova’s winning streak to three games as they head into the heart of the Big East schedule. DePaul, mired in a difficult season, has now lost four of its last five contests.
Villanova next hosts Creighton on Thursday. DePaul travels to face Saint John’s, also on Thursday.
The game was played with a running clock in the fourth quarter under conference mercy rules. According to pregame analytics from Interstat’s ELO system, Villanova entered with a 93.9 percent probability to win, a forecast the Wildcats fulfilled with a comprehensive performance on both ends of the court.
