East Tennessee State at Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle marked by scoring droughts and a decisive second-quarter swing, the Memphis Tigers held off a late rally to defeat the East Tennessee State Lady Buccaneers 60-54 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at FedExForum.
A crowd of 659 watched as the Tigers evened their season record at 3-3, while the Lady Buccaneers fell to 1-5.
The game’s trajectory was defined by a stark contrast in the first half. East Tennessee State established an early advantage, closing the first quarter with a 10-4 lead as the Memphis offense sputtered, managing just two field goals in the opening period.
The second quarter, however, belonged entirely to the Tigers. Memphis erupted for 22 points, spearheaded by Jordan Hunter, who scored seven of her team-high 12 points during the frame. The Tigers’ defense simultaneously clamped down, forcing a series of Lady Buccaneers turnovers that led to 17 points off giveaways in the game. The 22-11 quarter in favor of Memphis turned a six-point deficit into a 26-21 halftime lead.
East Tennessee State refused to capitulate, mounting a sustained challenge after halftime. The Lady Buccaneers chipped away at the lead throughout the second half, outscoring Memphis 33-34 over the final two quarters. A key contributor was Paige Lyons, who scored a game-high 14 points, including a crucial layup and free throw in the final minutes that brought East Tennessee State within a single possession.
Despite the pressure, Memphis executed down the stretch. Tamya Smith and Jordan Hunter combined for three critical free throws in the final 14 seconds to secure the victory. Hunter finished with 12 points for Memphis, while Chaé Harris provided a versatile stat line of eight points, six rebounds, four assists and a block.
For East Tennessee State, Lyons’ 14 points were matched by teammate Anala Nelson, who also added four rebounds and three assists. Kennedy Younkin controlled the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds for the Lady Buccaneers.
While East Tennessee State held a slight edge in points in the paint, 24-22, Memphis’s ability to capitalize on mistakes proved to be the difference. The Tigers’ 17 points off turnovers dwarfed the Lady Buccaneers’ seven.
Memphis will look to build on the win when it hosts Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday. East Tennessee State continues its road stretch at Bellarmine next Friday.
