Austin Peay at Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Austin Peay Governors used a balanced scoring attack and a strong defensive effort to secure a 68-54 road victory over the Chattanooga Lady Mocs in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Thursday night at McKenzie Arena.
Despite a game-high 18 points from Chattanooga’s Gianna Corbitt, the Governors methodically built a lead and never trailed, improving their season record to 3-1. The loss dropped Chattanooga to 2-4.
Austin Peay established control early, outscoring the Lady Mocs 16-12 in the first quarter and extending their advantage to 34-22 by halftime. Chattanooga mounted its most significant challenge in the third quarter, outscoring the Governors 18-13 to cut into the deficit, but Austin Peay responded with a dominant 21-point fourth quarter to seal the win.
Jim’Miyah Branton led the Governors with 14 points, while Anovia Sheals added 11. The Governors’ depth was on full display as Jade Rucker and Kyra Perkins each contributed nine points, and JaNiah Newell and Maeva Fotsa added eight and seven points, respectively.
For Chattanooga, Corbitt’s 18 points were supplemented by 13 points from Kalifa Ford. Sarah Owona provided a spark off the bench, scoring all six of her points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Governors’ consistent pressure.
The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 1,272 at McKenzie Arena. The result was an upset according to Interstat’s ELO system, which had projected Chattanooga with a 75.60 percent probability to win.
Austin Peay will look to continue its momentum on the road against Southern Illinois on Sunday. Chattanooga aims to rebound at home against Northern Kentucky on Saturday.
