Austin Peay Tops Chattanooga for Road Win

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Austin Peay Governors used a stifling defensive effort and a balanced scoring attack to secure a 68-54 road victory over the Chattanooga Lady Mocs in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Thursday night at McKenzie Arena.

In a game where they never trailed, the Governors built a commanding early lead and weathered a third-quarter push from the Lady Mocs to improve their season record to 3-1. Chattanooga, despite a game-high 18 points from Gianna Corbitt, fell to 2-4.

Austin Peay set the tone from the opening tip, establishing a 16-12 lead after the first quarter and extending it to a 34-22 advantage by halftime. The Governors’ defense was particularly potent in the second quarter, holding the Lady Mocs to just 10 points.

Chattanooga emerged from the locker room with renewed energy, outscoring Austin Peay 18-13 in the third period. A key sequence saw the Lady Mocs’ Kalifa Ford connect on a 3-pointer, followed by a steal that led to a Corbitt layup, trimming the deficit to single digits and forcing an Austin Peay timeout. The Governors’ lead was cut to 47-40 heading into the final frame.

Any momentum the Lady Mocs carried into the fourth quarter was quickly extinguished. Austin Peay opened the period with a decisive 9-2 run, capped by a Maeva Fotsa hook shot, to push their lead back to 14 points and effectively seal the game. The Governors’ offense exploded for 21 points in the final quarter to close out the win.

Jim’Miyah Branton led a well-distributed Governors’ scoring effort with 14 points, while also contributing three assists and two blocks in a team-high 36 minutes. Anovia Sheals added 11 points, and the bench provided a significant spark, with Jade Rucker scoring nine points, Kyra Perkins adding eight, and JaNiah Newell also chipping in eight points.

For Chattanooga, Corbitt’s 18 points came on an efficient 7-of-12 shooting performance, and she added three assists and two blocks. Ford was the only other Lady Moc in double figures, finishing with 13 points and four assists. Sarah Owona provided a late spark off the bench, scoring all six of her points on two 3-pointers in the final minutes.

The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 1,272. Austin Peay will look to continue its early-season success when it travels to face Southern Illinois on Sunday. Chattanooga will aim to rebound at home against Northern Kentucky on Saturday.
