Tennessee at Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a dominant display of defense and transition offense, the Tennessee Lady Volunteers overwhelmed the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders in a lopsided women’s basketball contest Thursday night at Murphy Athletics Center.

The Lady Volunteers seized control from the opening tip, building a commanding 25-9 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. Tennessee’s relentless pressure forced the Blue Raiders into a staggering 24 turnovers, which the Lady Volunteers converted into easy scoring opportunities throughout the game. The 44-point margin of victory underscored a complete performance by the visiting squad.

Janiah Barker led all scorers, pacing Tennessee with an efficient 20 points. The 6-foot-4 forward from Marietta, Georgia, was a force on both ends, adding two blocks. She was complemented by Deniya Prawl, who chipped in 15 points, and Talaysia Cooper, who filled the stat sheet with 13 points and five assists.

For the Blue Raiders, Savannah Davis was the lone bright spot on offense, finishing with a team-high 18 points. However, she struggled from beyond the arc and Middle Tennessee’s offense sputtered as a unit, managing to connect on only 13 of its 49 field goal attempts for the game.

The Lady Volunteers’ defensive intensity was the story, as they racked up 17 steals. Cooper was instrumental in that effort, spearheading the perimeter pressure. Tennessee also dominated the glass, pulling down 18 offensive rebounds that led to numerous second-chance points and highlighted a significant size and athleticism advantage.

With the victory, Tennessee improves its season record to 4-1. The Lady Volunteers will look to build on this momentum when they return home to face Coppin State on Sunday.

Middle Tennessee falls to 2-3 with the loss. The Blue Raiders will travel to Niceville, Florida, for their next contest, facing Providence on Monday.
