Tennessee Lady Volunteers Dominate Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders in Road Victory

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of defensive pressure and offensive firepower, the Tennessee Lady Volunteers delivered a resounding 85-41 victory over the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders in a non-conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at a packed Murphy Athletics Center.

A crowd of 10,212 witnessed the Lady Volunteers, now 4-1 on the season, overwhelm the Blue Raiders from the opening tip, building a 25-9 lead after the first quarter and extending it to a 48-16 advantage by halftime. The Blue Raiders fell to 2-3 with the loss.

Tennessee’s defense was the story of the game, forcing Middle Tennessee into 24 turnovers, which the Lady Volunteers converted into numerous transition opportunities. Tennessee also recorded 17 steals, with Talaysia Cooper leading the charge with five. The Lady Volunteers’ relentless pressure held the Blue Raiders to just 13 made field goals on 49 attempts, a frigid 26.5 percent shooting performance.

Offensively, Tennessee was led by Janiah Barker, a 6-foot-4 forward from Marietta, Georgia, who scored a game-high 20 points in just 23 minutes of action. She was efficient from the floor and added two blocks. Deniya Prawl, a 6-foot-2 guard from Toronto, Canada, provided a significant spark with 15 points, while Cooper, from Turbeville, South Carolina, filled the stat sheet with 13 points and five assists.

The Lady Volunteers’ depth was on full display as Mya Pauldo of Paterson, New Jersey, also reached double figures with 10 points. Tennessee’s ball movement was crisp, resulting in 17 assists on 33 made baskets.

For Middle Tennessee, the lone bright spot was Savannah Davis. The 5-foot-10 guard from Mckenzie, Tennessee, fought hard for a team-high 18 points, but received little offensive support. Kirston Verhulst, from De Soto, Kansas, was the only other Blue Raider in double digits, finishing with 10 points.

The game was effectively decided in the first half. Tennessee opened the contest on a 14-0 run before Davis finally put the Blue Raiders on the board with a three-pointer more than halfway through the first quarter. The Lady Volunteers’ lead never dipped below double digits again, as they continued to stifle Middle Tennessee’s offensive sets and capitalize on mistakes.

Tennessee’s dominance was also evident on the glass, where they outrebounded the Blue Raiders and secured 18 offensive rebounds, leading to multiple second-chance points. The Lady Volunteers shot 47.1 percent from the field, while Middle Tennessee’s offensive struggles were encapsulated by an offensive rating of just 56.1 points per 100 possessions.

The victory extends Tennessee’s winning streak to three games following a season-opening loss to North Carolina State. The Lady Volunteers will look to continue their momentum when they host Coppin State on Sunday.

Middle Tennessee, after a challenging stretch against power-conference opponents, will travel to Niceville, Florida, to face Providence on Monday.
