Cal State Fullerton at Denver
DENVER (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by turnovers and missed opportunities, the Denver Pioneers held off a late surge from the Cal State Fullerton Titans to secure a 60-55 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Magness Arena.
The game was a contest of runs, with Denver building a double-digit lead in the first half only to see Cal State Fullerton claw back to make it a one-possession game in the final minutes. The Pioneers ultimately sealed the win at the free-throw line in the closing seconds.
Denver guard Coryn Watts, a native of Aurora, Colorado, led all scorers with 23 points, showcasing her ability to drive and draw fouls. She was complemented by backcourt mate Victoria Baker of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, who added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Their backcourt production proved critical in offsetting a sloppy team performance that included 24 turnovers.
The Titans were paced by Cristina Jones of Long Beach, California, who scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. Her relentless attacks in the paint kept Cal State Fullerton within striking distance throughout the contest.
Denver established control early, closing the first quarter on a 12-4 run to lead 14-10. The Pioneers then exploded in the second quarter, outscoring the Titans 20-12 to take a commanding 34-22 lead into halftime. The Titans’ offense struggled to find consistency, shooting just 31.7 percent from the floor for the game and a frigid 15.8 percent from three-point range.
Cal State Fullerton refused to capitulate, mounting a significant comeback in the third quarter. The Titans outscored Denver 19-16 in the period, cutting the deficit to nine points heading into the final frame. The rally was fueled by defensive pressure, as the Titans racked up 16 steals, leading to numerous transition opportunities.
The Titans continued to chip away in the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap to just two points in the final minutes. However, crucial free throws from Baker in the last seconds, coupled with a key defensive stop, allowed Denver to escape with the five-point victory.
Despite the loss, Cal State Fullerton won several statistical battles. The Titans dominated the offensive glass, pulling down 10 offensive rebounds to Denver’s four, which led to a 30-20 advantage in points in the paint. They also dished out 16 assists compared to Denver’s 10.
Both teams’ offenses were inefficient, as reflected in their offensive ratings. Cal State Fullerton scored 55 points on 79 possessions for a rating of 70.0, while Denver managed 60 points on 80 possessions for a rating of 74.5.
With the win, Denver improves its season record to 2-3. The Pioneers will look to build momentum when they host Regis on Friday. Cal State Fullerton falls to 1-3 and will hit the road for its next contest at Sacramento State on Friday.
