Bailey Leads Charleston Southern to Convincing Win Over Presbyterian
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — Tyonna Bailey scored 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Charleston Southern to a dominant 88-62 victory over Presbyterian in a Big South Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at CSU Field House.
The Buccaneers, who led wire-to-wire, improved to 8-16 overall. The Blue Hose fell to 3-21.
Charleston Southern established control immediately, opening the game on a 10-2 run. The Buccaneers’ defense set the tone early, with Nevaeh Jones blocking a Krystal Haddock layup attempt just 45 seconds into the contest. That defensive intensity fueled an efficient offensive start, as Charleston Southern shot 52.9% from the floor in the first half and built a commanding 46-27 lead by halftime.
The most important stretch of the game came in the second quarter, where the Buccaneers effectively put the contest out of reach. Leading 31-22, Charleston Southern closed the first half on a 15-5 run over the final 6:27. Bailey was instrumental during this surge, contributing seven points, including a three-pointer and a driving layup. The run was capped by a Sydney Bradley three-pointer with 49 seconds left, giving the home team a 19-point cushion and all the momentum heading into the break.
Bailey, a 5-foot-10 guard from Newark, New Jersey, was the game’s standout performer, adding four assists and two steals to her double-double in 32 minutes of action. She consistently found gaps in the Presbyterian defense, both in transition and in half-court sets.
Jones, a 6-foot-2 forward from Bastrop, Texas, provided a formidable interior presence for the Buccaneers. She scored 14 points, but her impact was most felt on defense, where she recorded five blocked shots, altering countless other attempts and helping limit Presbyterian to just 36.9% shooting from the field.
Presbyterian was led by Haddock, a 5-foot-10 guard from Greenville, North Carolina, who scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds in 38 minutes. Ja’Cia Cunningham added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Blue Hose.
The statistical disparity told the story of Charleston Southern’s comprehensive performance. The Buccaneers were exceptionally efficient, scoring 88 points on just 72 possessions for an offensive rating of 121.5. They shot 55.8% from the field and a scorching 91.7% from the free-throw line, making 22 of 24 attempts.
Conversely, Presbyterian struggled with its offensive execution, posting an offensive rating of 83.3. The Blue Hose shot just 2 of 14 from three-point range and a costly 12 of 24 from the foul line. Despite winning the offensive rebounding battle 14-5, they could not convert those second chances sufficiently to mount a comeback.
Caelan Ellis contributed 10 points for Charleston Southern, while Bradley came off the bench to score 11 points, all in the second half, including three three-pointers.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Charleston Southern, which defeated Presbyterian 77-73 in Clinton, South Carolina, on Jan. 23. The Buccaneers have now won three of their last five games.
Presbyterian, which has lost four straight, continues to search for its first conference win of the season. The Blue Hose have lost 12 consecutive games against Division I opponents since a non-conference win over Erskine on Nov. 17.
Charleston Southern will look to build on this performance when it travels to face High Point next Saturday. Presbyterian returns home to host Gardner-Webb next Saturday.
