Wildcats Pull Away Late, Sweep Season Series From Hoyas
BRYN MAWR, Pa. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Villanova Wildcats methodically pulled away from the Georgetown Hoyas in the fourth quarter to secure a 67-55 victory in a Big East women’s basketball contest Saturday at The Pavilion.
The Wildcats, improving to 19-5 overall, used a decisive 22-point final period to break open what had been a tight, grinding affair for the first 30 minutes. The Hoyas, who fell to 12-12, kept the margin within single digits for much of the game but ultimately could not overcome a season-high 20 turnovers, which Villanova converted into 18 points.
The most critical phase of the game began late in the third quarter with Villanova holding a narrow 45-40 lead. Georgetown’s Khia Miller, who finished with 12 points and four blocks, had just converted a pair of free throws to keep the Hoyas within striking distance. Over the next six minutes of game time, however, Villanova unleashed a 17-4 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters, transforming a five-point edge into a commanding 62-44 advantage with 4:51 remaining.
The run was fueled by Villanova’s defensive activity and balanced scoring. It included a three-pointer from Brynn McCurry, a driving layup and free throw from Denae Carter, and back-to-back three-pointers from Kennedy Henry. Georgetown, meanwhile, managed only a single layup from Laila Jewett during that stretch, as their offensive execution faltered against Villanova’s persistent half-court defense.
Jasmine Bascoe led all scorers with 19 points for Villanova, adding five rebounds and three assists. Kennedy Henry filled the stat sheet with 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals, serving as a catalyst during the game-breaking run. Denae Carter contributed 11 points and six assists, while Kelsey Joens added 10 points and six rebounds.
For Georgetown, Jewett and Miller each scored 12 points, with Miller’s defensive presence accounting for four of the team’s seven blocks. Brianna Byars was a force on the glass, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds to go with six points.
The game’s tempo and tone were set early. Villanova established an early lead, closing the first quarter up 19-12 behind efficient ball movement and inside scoring, where they would ultimately hold a 30-16 advantage for the game. Georgetown, relying heavily on Miller’s shot-blocking and Byars’ rebounding, chipped away in the second quarter, trailing just 30-24 at halftime.
The third quarter saw both teams trade baskets, with Georgetown’s Khadee Hession hitting a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 38-35 at the 3:26 mark. Villanova responded with a 7-2 spurt to end the quarter, setting the stage for the decisive fourth-quarter surge.
Statistically, the game was a story of efficiency and mistakes. Villanova shot 37.9% from the field and 34.8% from three-point range, while Georgetown managed just 34.5% overall. The Wildcats dished out 10 assists to Georgetown’s six and recorded 10 steals, led by Henry and Carter. Georgetown’s 20 turnovers proved a crippling figure, offsetting their advantages in blocks and a near-even rebounding battle.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Villanova, which defeated Georgetown 76-69 in Washington on Dec. 4. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Villanova entered the game with a 90.80 percent probability to win.
Georgetown, which has now lost four of its last five games, will look to regroup when it hosts Providence on Feb. 14. Villanova, solidifying its position in the upper tier of the Big East, travels to Xavier on Wednesday.
