Michigan at Rutgers
Preview: Michigan Looks to Rebound at Rutgers in Big Ten Clash
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Interstat) — The Michigan women’s basketball team aims to bounce back from a rare stumble when it visits Rutgers in a Big Ten Conference matchup Thursday night at Louis Brown Center.
The Wolverines (15-3, 5-2 Big Ten) saw a five-game winning streak snapped Monday in a 72-69 home loss to Vanderbilt, a non-conference setback that highlighted recent offensive inconsistencies. Prior to that, Michigan had been dominant, including an 86-60 rout of Wisconsin and a 105-65 road thrashing of Penn State earlier this month.
Rutgers (9-9, 2-5) enters with momentum after a 76-72 road victory over Penn State on Sunday, snapping a five-game skid. The Scarlet Knights’ conference season has been a struggle, marked by a 41-88 loss to Maryland and a 49-71 defeat at Ohio State.
A key matchup will feature Michigan’s versatile guard Kendall Dudley against Rutgers’ standout forward Nene Ndiaye. Dudley is coming off a strong all-around performance in the loss to Vanderbilt, posting 16 points, four rebounds and four assists in 23 minutes. Over her last eight games, she has been a steady contributor on both ends.
Ndiaye powered the Scarlet Knights’ recent win, scoring 20 points and grabbing six rebounds in 36 minutes against Penn State. She has been a bright spot during the team’s up-and-down season, reaching double-figure scoring in five of her last seven contests.
Michigan’s offense, which averages over 78 points per game, will test a Rutgers defense that has allowed 70 points or more in four of its five conference losses. The Wolverines have relied on balanced scoring, with Syla Swords and Brooke Q Daniels joining Dudley as consistent threats. Daniels recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds and seven points in the Vanderbilt game.
For Rutgers to pull an upset, it will need another high-output game from Ndiaye and continued backcourt production from Kaylah Ivey, who had 12 points and six assists against Penn State. The Scarlet Knights must also improve their ball security and find consistent scoring beyond their top options to keep pace with Michigan’s firepower.
This game begins a challenging stretch for both teams. Michigan faces a quick turnaround with a home game against Southern California on Sunday. Rutgers continues a homestand against Washington on Sunday before a rematch with Oregon next week.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Thursday. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
