Michigan Dominates Rutgers in Big Ten Women’s Basketball Matchup

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Interstat) — The Michigan women’s basketball team delivered a dominant wire-to-wire performance Thursday night, overwhelming Rutgers with a suffocating defensive effort to secure a 94-60 victory in a Big Ten Conference matchup at Louis Brown Athletic Center.

From the opening tip, the Wolverines set a punishing pace, racing to a 31-13 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. The tone was established early as Michigan forced Rutgers into a staggering 26 turnovers, converting those miscues into a relentless stream of transition opportunities. The Scarlet Knights struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Michigan’s pressure, which generated 14 steals.

Michigan’s offensive execution was crisp and balanced. The Wolverines shot 52.5% from the field and connected on 9 of 19 attempts from three-point range. Their ball movement, resulting in 14 assists, consistently carved open the Rutgers defense.

Olivia Olson and Syla Swords each scored 16 points to lead a deep Michigan scoring attack. Mila Holloway added 15 points and dished out five assists, while Te’Yala Delfosse provided a significant spark off the bench with 15 points. Kendall Dudley also reached double figures with 10 points.

Rutgers was led by Faith Blackstone, who fought for a game-high 21 points. Kaylah Ivey contributed 15 points, but the Scarlet Knights’ offense was hamstrung by the turnover count and an inability to keep pace with Michigan’s scoring bursts. Rutgers shot 46% from the floor but managed only seven free throw attempts to Michigan’s 31.

The most decisive stretch of the game came in the opening period. After Rutgers’ Blackstone scored the game’s first basket, Michigan unleashed a devastating 18-2 run over the next four and a half minutes. The run was fueled by relentless defensive pressure, leading to multiple Rutgers turnovers that the Wolverines converted into easy baskets. Olivia Olson was central to the surge, scoring eight early points, while Swords and Holloway hit three-pointers. By the time the quarter ended with Michigan leading 31-13, the Wolverines had already forced eight Rutgers turnovers and established a command they would not relinquish.

Michigan’s defense remained the story throughout. The Wolverines held Rutgers to an offensive rating of just 78.7 points per 100 possessions while posting a stellar 124.1 rating of their own. The rebounding battle was also lopsided, with Michigan securing a 12-5 advantage on the offensive glass.

With the win, Michigan improves to 16-3 overall. Rutgers falls to 9-10.

Michigan next hosts Southern California on Sunday. Rutgers will also be at home Sunday, facing Washington.
