Lafayette at Bucknell
LEWISBURG, Pa. (Interstat) — Two Patriot League women’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Wednesday when the Lafayette Leopards visit the Bucknell Bison at Sojka Pavilion.
Both squads enter the Jan. 14 contest looking to rebound from decisive weekend losses. Lafayette (6-9) was routed 97-58 by Navy on Saturday, while Bucknell (4-11) fell 49-46 at Loyola Maryland.
The Leopards have shown flashes, including a 65-64 road win at Boston University on Jan. 7, but consistency has eluded them. They will lean on guard Teresa Kiewiet, who has been a bright spot. Kiewiet is coming off a 17-point performance against Navy and averaged 17.4 points over her last five games, including a 23-point outing in the win over BU.
The Bison have struggled through a difficult stretch, losing their last four games. Their most recent victory was a 102-26 non-conference rout of Division III Gwynedd Mercy on Dec. 20. Guard Kaila Richards, who had 15 points and four assists in that win, will be a key for Bucknell. She led the team with eight points in the narrow loss to Loyola Maryland.
Historically, Bucknell has dominated the series, but this matchup presents a chance for either team to gain footing in the league standings. Lafayette’s offense, when functioning, has proven capable, but it must overcome a Bison defense that held Loyola Maryland under 50 points.
The game will be the first of a home-and-home series between the programs this season, with the rematch scheduled for Jan. 26 in Easton.
Following this contest, Lafayette will travel to face Holy Cross on Saturday, while Bucknell will host Colgate the same day.
