Lafayette Tops Bucknell in Patriot League Women’s Basketball

LEWISBURG, Pa. (Interstat) — Maddison Krug transformed the paint into her personal fortress Wednesday night, anchoring a dominant defensive performance that carried the Lafayette women’s basketball team to a 62-49 victory over Bucknell at Sojka Pavilion.

The 6-foot-3 junior from North Kingstown, Rhode Island, was a towering presence, swatting six shots and pulling down 18 rebounds to stifle the Bison offense and help the Leopards snap a two-game skid. Her defensive masterclass, which included four blocks in the first quarter alone, set an immediate tone and allowed Lafayette to build a lead it would never relinquish in the Patriot League contest.

Lafayette improved to 7-9 overall, while Bucknell fell to 4-12. The result defied the pregame analytics, as Interstat’s ELO system had projected the Bison with a 76.4 percent probability to win on their home floor.

The game’s most pivotal sequence was a defensive stand spanning the third and fourth quarters that effectively sealed the outcome. Leading 46-38 entering the final period, Lafayette saw its advantage threatened when Bucknell’s Tuana Coskun hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 44-47 with 7:41 remaining. The Bison, however, would not score another field goal for over seven minutes. During that drought, the Leopards’ defense, still anchored by Krug, forced a series of misses and turnovers, allowing Lafayette to embark on a decisive 13-2 run that pushed the lead to 60-46 with just over a minute to play. Bucknell managed only five points in the final quarter, a testament to the Leopards’ sustained defensive pressure.

Krug’s stat line of 36 minutes, four points, 18 rebounds, two assists and six blocks was the engine of the victory. Her 18 rebounds were a game high and her six blocks matched a career-best defensive effort. She was complemented offensively by guard Teresa Kiewiet, who poured in a game-high 20 points. The sophomore from North Mankato, Minnesota, hit four 3-pointers and added four rebounds. Sauda Ntaconayigize of Quebec City contributed 14 points and five rebounds, while Haylie Adamski of Media, Pennsylvania, added 12 points. Point guard Talia Zurinskas of Allentown, Pennsylvania, directed the offense with seven assists.

Bucknell was led by Coskun, a freshman from Istanbul, Turkey, who scored 16 points. Desirae Ashton of Fredericksburg, Virginia, provided a spark off the bench with 10 points and six rebounds. Isabella Casey of Radnor, Pennsylvania, finished with seven points and six rebounds.

The Leopards established control early, leading 14-11 after a first quarter defined by Krug’s shot-blocking. She rejected four Bison attempts in the opening period, altering countless others. Lafayette extended its lead to 30-22 by halftime, but Bucknell found a rhythm in the second quarter, scoring 19 points to stay within striking distance.

Any momentum for the home team was extinguished after halftime. Lafayette’s defense tightened considerably, holding Bucknell to just eight points in the third quarter on 3-of-15 shooting. The Bison’s offensive struggles culminated in the fourth-quarter drought that allowed Lafayette to pull away comfortably.

The Leopards shot consistently across all four quarters, scoring 16 points in the second, third and fourth periods. Bucknell, meanwhile, could not find any sustained offensive flow, shooting below 30 percent from the floor for the game. The Bison also committed 15 turnovers, which Lafayette converted into 18 points.

A crowd of 310 at Sojka Pavilion saw the Leopards win their second Patriot League game of the season. The victory provides a positive start to a critical stretch of conference play.

Lafayette will look to build on the win when it travels to face Holy Cross on Saturday. Bucknell aims to regroup at home against Colgate, also on Saturday. The two teams will meet again in a rematch at Lafayette on Jan. 26.
