Holy Cross Edges Bucknell in Patriot League Women’s Basketball Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by precision at the free-throw line and a pivotal final minute, Holy Cross edged Bucknell 58-55 in a Patriot League women’s basketball opener for both teams Wednesday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion.

The contest, which saw neither team lead by more than seven points, was ultimately decided at the charity stripe. Holy Cross converted 15 of 16 free throws, a stark contrast to Bucknell’s 8-for-11 performance. That disparity proved decisive in a game where every possession carried weight.

Holy Cross improved to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Bucknell fell to 4-8 and 0-1.

The Crusaders relied heavily on the inside-outside combination of Meg Cahalan and Simone Foreman. Cahalan, a 6-foot-2 junior from Middletown, New Jersey, led all scorers with 19 points, adding four assists in 32 minutes. Foreman, a 5-9 graduate student from Odenton, Maryland, recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Bucknell countered with its own potent duo. Sophomore Tuana Coskun of Istanbul, Turkey, poured in a team-high 19 points, while classmate Isabella Casey from Radnor, Pennsylvania, added 19 points of her own. Elena Houghton, a 6-1 freshman from Washington, D.C., facilitated the offense with a game-high seven assists.

The game’s offensive rhythm was stifled by tenacious defense, resulting in a combined 24 turnovers and poor shooting from beyond the arc. Holy Cross managed just 3 of 19 from three-point range, while Bucknell was 3 for 10. The Crusaders held a narrow efficiency edge, posting an offensive rating of 91.2 points per 100 possessions compared to Bucknell’s 88.4.

Holy Cross built its largest lead at 32-25 early in the third quarter after a Cahalan three-pointer. Bucknell responded with a 14-2 run, fueled by Coskun and Casey, to take a 39-34 advantage. The Crusaders chipped away, entering the fourth quarter down 41-39.

The final period featured five lead changes. With Holy Cross clinging to a 54-53 lead and under a minute to play, Coskun hit a tough jumper to put Bucknell back ahead 55-54 with 58 seconds remaining.

The ensuing sequence defined the night. On Holy Cross’s next possession, Kaitlyn Flanagan was fouled by Anna Kunzwiler and calmly sank both free throws to restore a 56-55 Crusader lead with 46 seconds left. After a Bucknell timeout, the Bison worked for a final shot, but Coskun’s contested three-point attempt at the buzzer missed, sealing the Holy Cross victory.

Flanagan, a sophomore guard from Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, finished with 11 points, four assists and a critical late steal. Her backcourt mate, Kendall Eddy of Haverhill, Massachusetts, contributed three steals for a Holy Cross defense that forced 13 turnovers.

The most important part of the game was the final minute, where composure under pressure separated the teams. After Bucknell’s Coskun hit a go-ahead jumper with 58 seconds left, Holy Cross immediately answered not with a field goal, but with Flanagan’s two clutch free throws. The Crusaders then got a final defensive stop, with Coskun’s three-point attempt as time expired missing the mark, preserving a victory built on late-game execution and superior free-throw shooting.

Holy Cross opens its conference slate with a road win, while Bucknell is left to rue missed opportunities in a game it led late. Both teams continue Patriot League play Saturday, with Holy Cross traveling to Navy and Bucknell visiting Lehigh.
